Re: Classes at Michaels craft store

I just bought some of the pretty paper and a couple of rubber stamps.. the rubber stamps are amazing.. i went to to the library yesterday to see what and how to use them.. i currently stamp it and then color it in with markers, but you can paint the acutal stamp and emboss it. i made one page of a scrap book so far.. my problem is i always took pics on the digital camera, and then the computer crashed and lost them all, so now i am taking pitures like a mad girl!!! i am taking a class at micheals on Aug. 9th and then if i like it i am going to take the class on scrapbooking...i have the schedule and times if anyone is interested...

Suzanne,

I'm interested ... thanks!

Plus, I have another question - do photographs get old and yellow if you don't put them in an album with the clear over them. Kinda like in a scrapbook. I was going to do that with my proofs and I'm afraid too. I think they may be better in a protective cover! And since I know that your Dad is a photographer and you love to scrapbook, I thought I'd ask!

Thanks,
Cira

I love scrapbooking too but never took the time to do it. I have collected photos and ticket stubs and anything related to vacations, to make them, but just never made the time to START !
If anyone goes to a Michaels class out east (smithtown area ?), let me know, i'll go too !

Jenn, youre funny, saying that you have no talent, you must be SOMEWHAT creative to be able to handle a class of 5 year olds !! youre probably the most creative one here ! theres no right way to do it, just cut and paste and have a ball !

Cira, I agree with you about the photos not being protected well. A girl i used to work with made one, but used a very good quality photo album (with the slide in slots, not the sticky plastic pages with cardboard in between- i hate those, i have several old ones that are yellowing). I guess the down side of those is that they are usually smaller, so there wont be as much space to 'Get creative' and you usually cant buy additional pages, they are bound books, right ?

Cira, make a scrap book for that friend of yours!

Oh, I have my share of talent on the idea end of things, but when it comes to actually creating a project or activity, well, let's just say that it's not my strong point. I team teach with a totally crafty person. I'm the idea girl and she executes them. We're a pretty good team.

I started scrapping (or cropping as it is also known) about a year ago so I give you few tips. As far as yellowing goes, as long as you use acid-free paper, albums, glue, pens, etc. you do not need to worry about anything aging. The reason some yellow is because of the acid (like a newspaper is highly acid and that is why it yellows so quickly). Most of the stuff you find in the scrapbooking section at Michaels is acid-free so you will be fine if you stick with that.
As for other tips, keep your photographs nicely organized so that when you begin your pages it will be easy to see which photos to use.
As for Michaels classes, I haven't been to any. I just kind of taught myself. I went a little crazy and bought just about every tool imaginable. The classes are probably pretty good though so I will go one day.

Misha, what kind of glue do you use? Some things I glued down are starting to peel up and I'm getting upset! Do you have any recommendations for me?

Re: Classes at Michaels craft store

I have been scrapping for about 2 years now. I made an album for ,my husband and gave it to him at our rehersal dinner.....it brought many tears to a few eyes.

The house we are buying actually has a room that my mom and I are making into our scrapping room!!! :)
I take classes from a woman I meet online and has actually become a very good friend of mine in Massapequa!! Now, if you want to see talent...you have got to see her work!! FANTASTIC!!

If anyone is interesdted...she has many classes...from beginnners to the more advanced...scrapping and stamping, let me know and I will give you her email address and she will send you her calander. Her classes are from 8-10pm and ranger from between $12-$18. Her class schedule will include any intructions and supplies that you would need.

Email me [email protected] if anyone is interetesed!

Thanks

Re: Classes at Michaels craft store--JennRenee

I have been using 2 kinds of glue, both of which work great and hold things down well. One is a spray adhesive (made by 3M I believe) and the other is I think, called glue dots. The spray really stinks but is extremely well-sealing. You have to do it in a room where you have lots of ventilation! The dots is neat because it basically looks like a notebook but you lift up the paper and put your picture on it and then use a top sheet to press down. When you lift the top paper up and remove the picture, the glue is on the back. It is great b/c the glue doesn't get everywhere. The other thing I use for photos though are little photo corners. I forget the real name but they are like little stickers that you put on the back of the photograph on the corners. I haven't had any problems with them coming off but it gives the photo a slightly raised look, which you may or may not want. Hope that helps.

Cira,
The acid free paper should be fine for your photos, and make sure you dont keep your albums in damp places, and in direct sunlight.

As for the photo Corners, heres what i do.. dont buy them..if you get as much junk mail as i do (mostly from LIWEDDINGS VENDORS) snip off the corners of the envelope, you can color them or leave them! its great and it saves you tons of cash!! i just blew another 80.00 at micheals yesterday on what i have no idea!!!!!
Heres some of the classes going on this month!

Oh boy... I've been using the wrong glue. I figured I was, and now I'm glad to have some options to look into. Can I get the glues you mentioned at Michaels?
Thanks!

Re: Classes at Michaels craft store--JennRenee

Definitely! Michael's has everything you could need. Also, if you really get into the scrapbooking thing, you must go over to Scrapbook Alley in East Islip. They are extremely helpful, the whole store is dedicated to scrapping, they offer classes too. Be careful though, it's easy to spend a lot of money!! They have a web site too: www.scrapbookalleystory.com
Have fun!
