Communication with Mother in Law...

I love my MIL! She is the nicest person. But I sometimes have a really hard time relating to her. We have very different interests and she is very stylish and elegant. I'm never able to just start a conversation with her.

Any suggestions???

Re: Communication with Mother in Law...

May be you can tell her just what you told us! That she is stylish and elegant! What woman wouldn't want to hear that! Tell her how you see so many woman who don't take care of their appearance and that you really admire her ability to always look great!
That might strike a conversation too!

Re: Communication with Mother in Law...

You have something very important in common....her son and your husband. You can always start by talking about him to get things going.....what mother doesn't like to talk about her children?

Or ask her advice on something, mothers also love to feel needed and to be helpful....

Good Luck!

Re: Communication with Mother in Law...

My MIL is a very nice women but we are very different. I just have a very different way of doing things. We get along fine, but we are rarely alone together. I would have nothing to really talk to her about really.
plus she lives in MA so I don't have to really worry about it too often.

Re: Communication with Mother in Law...

My MIL is not a very outgoing woman, either. There have been times when striking a conversation with her is like pulling teeth! But, there are also times when we can ramble on and on for at least an hour (but those times are VERY rare)! I find that since we've had a child, it is much easier to talk with her, b/c the one *interest* we both cannot talk enough about is my son!
