Condo v. Townhouse

Can you tell me what the difference is on LI? I am in MD and I live in a townhouse, which to me is very different from a condo, which is more like an apartment than a house. But I can't seem to convince my friends and family from LI that I DO NOT live in a condo. They keep telling me that on LI a condo and a townhouse are the same. Is this true? None of them actually live in a townhouse or a condo, so they might just be flat out wrong. What do you ladies think?

Re: Condo v. Townhouse

Around here all townhouses are categorized as a condo where as apartments can be a condo or a co-op.

Since a townhouse is often attached and usually part of a community, they are lumped intot he condo category since you own the apt (not shares of a corp.).

Re: Condo v. Townhouse

Im not sure but I think a townhouse is style of dwelling while a condo is a legal classification.

So you could have a townhouse that is a condo, or a townhouse that is a more traditional ownership.

that is actually what we have. the phrase 'townhouse' just describes the style - bedrooms on the top floor.

Re: Condo v. Townhouse

Oh, that is so strange. Here a condo is an apartment and some are two levels but they do not have a basement, a townhouse is a house with three levels and a rowhome is a more narrow townhouse located downtown.

I guess my LI friends and family are not crazy.
