Ok so I am a LI bride and moved to VA after the wedding. With the spring/summer here I am hearing more and more of this term 'cook-out'. That's the South's way of saying 'BBQ'. They believe that BBQ is with pork and ribs. But once there is hotdogs, hamburgers, and steaks, it's a cook-out. Anyone else travel somewhere else that uses a different term for something other than what we are used to?
Just trying to keep the boards moving and with all the talk of BBQ's this weekend it got me thinking. (Also got me hungry!)

Re: Cook-out vs.BBQ
Cause thats really what it is. Hamburger and hot dogs is grilling and BBQ is the slow cooking pork and ribs.....I learned that long ago when I started watching the cooking shows.

Yeah it's called a cook-out here in NC also. Barbecue is a pulled pork sandwich.
They even call the actual device used for cooking a 'grill' here too.
But really, there's no difference between what we call a barbecue and they call a cook-out.

Re: Cook-out vs.BBQ
We were in RI in college and went to an ice cream parlor. We had long been having the jimmies vs. sprinkles debate, but when we went into this ice cream parlor it had jimmies on the menu.
My friend was being obnoxious and asked the server what jimmies were. She explained to us they were like sprinkles, thus giving us ammunition to torment my RI friend Brian.
I did look them up in Webster once... according to the dictionary Jimmies are the chocolate ones and sprinkles are the rainbow ones. But good luck arguing that among those New Englanders.

LOL yes that counts!
Our friend here calls pasta 'noodles'. DH and I had to teach her that is just wrong!
Ok, so for our cook-out we'll have some subs and noodles with gravy and then for dessert we'll have ice-cream with jimmies.
ETA: We'll need some pop to wash that all down.
Wrong!

Some other weird new england things: Subs are called grinders Can't say pie for pizza, they will literally think you mean a dessert pie Pizza comes in three sizes and they always ask if you want sauce and cheese....umm what else would you put on it They put CLAMS on pizza and cut the pie into 20 freaking slices Jimmies are little candies for ice creams
And my fav.....BUBBLER is the water fountain

I lived in AZ for a year and they didn't know what chicken cutlets were. Everyone looked at me like I had 5 heads when I asked for chicken cutlets. They call it chicken filets.
