Okay, I've been looking for a living room couch for a while, and I've seen a few things I like. I want something that is good quality, and won't look like c r a p in a year. Anything in particular I should look for?

Re: Couch shopping
I'd stay away from downfilled seat cushions. They are comfy but you need to fluff them constantly to keep them from lumping and matting, and to keep them looking good.
Other than that, I'm going through the same dilemma

Re: Couch shopping
I agree with Karen. We have a downfilled couch, and it stinks, it wasn't cheap either. We got it from Jennifer Convertibles last year, and now it really looks old. Not only are the pillows lumpy and flat if you don't fluff them constantly, but there are all of these little feathers that keep coming out of the pillows, right through the fabric. Cleanup is a nightmare, I swear, these feathers are worse than having a real christmas tree with pine needles.

Re: Couch shopping
I would also check to see if the sofa has springs or a webbing construction. Springs last MUCH longer. Webbing tends to tear and the cushion seats always sink. If you've had it happen to you, you know what I mean

Re: Couch shopping
If you want it to last a long time check what sort of wood its made with...i believe (not sure though) kilm dried is the best.
I definitely think you get what you pay for when it comes to couches...if you get a $500 one you will need to replace it in a few years, but if you spend a lot more for quality material, wood, internals, you will get years of use out of it.

We will be looking for a couch soon too ... but I'm thinking we are going for leather! Does anyone have any suggestions?

Re: Couch shopping
We have a leather couch & loveseat that we bought at The Place on Glen Cove Rd. I am very satisfied with the quality.

Re: Couch shopping
A designer friend of mine swears by Rowe for upholstered furniture. She says that for the money (they are not inexpensive) you get the best quality, selection and style.
I know Siegermans on 100 carried them at one time. I think Furnitureland South did too. I am going to start shopping for our LR and maybe DR furniture in the next few weeks so I'll let you know what I find.
Cira: We looked at leather couches too..we eventually decided against them because we have cats and we figured it was a lot of money to have scratched up (but we got a leather chair)
I really love the leather at Restoration Hardware...pricey but top of the line construction.
We got our leather chair from Pottery Barn and we love that...even with all the cat scratches it still looks very cool to me. This is my chair but I have it in brown leather.

Re: Couch shopping
JennRenee-- We just bought a couch and matching chair from Workbench. While researching, we learned that you want to look for foam cushions that are wrapped so that the foam is in the core. These last the longest and are very comfortable. We looked in every store imaginable--we ended up with Workbench because their styles are simple and classic and comfy! Here's a pic of what we bought!

Re: Couch shopping
Thanks so much for your input ladies! I found 3 couches that I really like (2 at Seigerman's and 1 at The Place), so I'm going to go back and find out how they are made before we decide for sure.
Cira ~ No comforter yet. I still haven't found anything that matches my bedroom decor, but I'm still looking...
Leelee, I love your couch!

Re: Couch shopping
Our new sofa is made of microfiber. It looks like suede but supposedly is very easy to clean. Haven't spilled anything on it yet though
Stef ... I love that chair in the Pottery Barn catalog! I actually saw a leather sectional in Restoration Hardware but Rob gave me the evil eye when he saw that it was $6000! A little to steep for a couch right now!!!
