So as many of you know I am an elementary vocal music teacher. I sing all day long everyday. When I am not singing, I am talking. I have been having a lot of hoarseness this year and am pretty sure that my vocal chord nodules are back. I am going to the ENT on Monday to get checked out. I am so frustrated because teaching with this sort of condition is nearly impossible and I will have to show videos to rest my chords. I feel so lame doing that. I really pride myself on giving my students the best music education I possibly can and feel like this stupid health issue is getting in the way. I know lots of teachers show videos and all but I feel like others will view me as lazy because they won't understand what the condition I have is. I just am terrified because this could be a recurring issue for my entire career and I can't stand it. Please pray that this week off from work helps me to heal up a bit and that the doctor has some sort of answer for me.

Thanks girls...basically I will need vocal rest and speech therapy. I obviously will not leave my job because of this...i will have to just be very creative and come up with some kick a ss lessons that don't involve me talking or singing. lol Luckily I am in the later part of the year...this would really be worse if it was November!

Surgery is an option but I would never do it. Julie Andrews had it and her vocal cords were permanently damaged from it. I will have to learn to talk properly and not shout...so hard for me since I am an Italian Loud talker! (I'm sure you understand! )

Re: Could use some happy thoughts Ladies!
I'm Gail's sister. We met at her party
I'm a singer as well and have been performing and taking lessons for a really long time now.
Do you take any sort of voice lessons now? Have you ever taken voice and speech classes so you can talk in a way that's healthy? Are you drinking enough water during the day?
Nodes are a symptom of bad technique or pushing the voice too far. Ether through speech or singing.
Who is your EMT? I have one that works almost exclusively with performers.
Surgery is a huge no no. Nodes can resolve themselves with proper care and rest.
Feel free to FM me if you would like my doctors info
ETA: A strange question but do you lift heavy over head weights?

Hi!! Thanks for the reply darlin!
Actually a large part of my nodes are due to acid reflux. I was diagnosed with them in high school and theyw ent away after resting. I went for speech therapy and didn't get much out of it because the therapist was did not specialize in vocal nodes.
I have taken tons of voice lessons since I was a teenager and am very much aware of proper singing technique. I am positive my nodes are cause in part by reflux but mainly by the speaking in a voice that is pitched too low. I pride myself in having good singing technique otherwise i would never teach others.
I was seeing Dr. Slippen in Huntington but have since moved and will be seeing Dr. O'Donnell in Patchogue on Monday. I am hoping that he can recommend a speech therapist to help with the proper speaking technique.
I definitely need to drink more water. I always forget. How much water do you recommend drinking? Did you ever have nodes?
ETA: and yes I do lift heavy weights

Opps! Hit the wrong thing there!
Ahh reflux! OK! Do you take anything for it currently? Do you think it's stress induced? A good holistic remedy is diglisterized licorice root extract. It's not drying to the throat at all and seems to work just as well as Prilosec and the like.
Drink as much water as you can with out drowning My voice teacher recommends at least 10 glasses a day. That doesn't include the water you should drink while working out and what not. When it's really hot or really cold drink even more! Have you tried throat coat tea? It really lubricates the throat and tastes yummy too!
Heavy weights. Ok. This may seem strange but I've been warned by voice teachers for many years to avoid lifting heavy weights. The muscles around your vocals folds are very delicate and need to remain flexible and soft. If you strain at all or hold your breath while lifting it can cause stress to these little muscles. I stopped lifting weights about a year ago (I do vinyasa flow yoga instead) and have noticed that my singing voice is more flexible and I can get my voice warmed up much quicker. Do you try to warm up before heading to school?
I was never officially diagnosed with nodes but when I went to college I had some vocal damage (bad voice teacher) and was placed with a damaged voice specialist. They suspected nodes but the hoarseness and warbly vibrato went away with the better training. I haven't had problems since. I also don't have to talk all day like you do!
Try not to stress to much. I'm sure whatever is wrong will be fixed. It seems like you have good doctors you trust and with your solid singing technique it may just be a slight adjustment to your speech. I have a friend who is also a chorus/music teacher and has had voice issues as well. Working with a speech teacher helped her immensly
