i know somebody who does it. From what i remember the pay is good, i forgot right now exactly how much it is per hour. But i know its not typical 9-5 hours. Some days you work, some days you dont. But i think there might be a difference, for example you can be an independent court reporter and get assigned to different courts.

hmm maybe my friend isn't a court reporter then - but its def something like that - but he works for the city - so i wouldnt think the pay is that great to start but i know you get a pension and all the perks of a city job....i know he sits in court all day and keeps files....are you talking about the people who record and do the transcripts?

a court reporter is a stenographer. The one that is in the court during a case that is typing everything that is being said.

You can't get into the courts right away. You have to have your degree and then you have to wait for exams. Then you have to hope for an opening. But, that is where you can make good money. Some people prefer the flexibility of freelancing. You can make good money doing that but you have to hustle a little more sometimes. If you can get in with a good agency, it can be good. You get paid per page for the transcript. I forget the rest. You have to watch with some of the agencies too, because they will try to undercut you with the rate.

yeah thats what i meant lol, i said independent bu yeah the person i know does freelance. I think she used to just work for a court but then decided to go this route. This is why some days you work, some days you dont, you can decide on assignments and that sort of stuff. I remember being told the hourly rate or however it is and saying thats not bad at all.

Exactly. My friend was working non-stop and was backed up with assignments. Then sometimes you have to wait for the agency to pay you and they jerk you around. Then she had a short period where she didn't have anything.

Initially the flexibility of it is what appealed to me, you know thinking more down the line. But, then I was always nervous about the thought of freelancing...not knowing where you will be placed. I like to be settled, so the idea of being in the courts appealed to me more then.

Thanks for all the information ladies. I don't know yet if it is for me. I would have to see what the class schedule is like and then figure that out too!

I have heard the pay is good not sure @ specifics. @ jury duty the court reporter had the hardest job IMO BC they have to get everything down exactly BC witness testimony is evidence and @ us jurors went back and rerad to come to our verdict.

Re: Court Reporting?

My aunt does this for a living and is free lance. She works some days in court and at home sometimes. She has a couple agencies that hire here in the city and she makes pretty good money. I think you can make $80K/yr

But it looks so hard to learn that steno machine and then when you get home you have to review the material and listen to tapes, etc.

Thanks for the information chickies!!

I talked to someone who is currently in school for this and it is extensive learning and also expensive to own the lap top and machine that it requires. I think it may not be for me at this time.
