Hi Newlyweds! I've been a lurker on your board for a while and am so excited to finally join you. I'll try to be more interesting in the future, really, but now I have a really boring/practical question to ask:
Every gift check we got at the wedding is made out to Dava and Damian Mc---. We don't have a checking account in both our names, and since we've only been married for 2 days, I'm certainly not legally 'Dava Mc---' yet. So what do we do with the checks? Can we open a joint account with my new name yet? Or do we open it under my old name, and he'll be okay depositing checks into the account with a different name on it?
Sorry if it's a dumb question; I'm new to all this married stuff. I also haven't slept in like a week. TIA!

Re: Depositing Gift Checks
Hi and welcome! We went to the bank the day after the wedding and opened a joint account. I think they used my maiden name, since its still not changed yet. We were able to deposit everything right then and there. HTH!

Re: Depositing Gift Checks
We both signed and deposited the checks made out to Mr & Mrs MarriedName - no problems!

Re: Depositing Gift Checks
we actually had a problem with this! we have a joint account already but since it had my maiden name on it, they wouldn't let us deposit the checks until my name was changed. to change my name i needed a copy of the marriage cert and my new driver's license! it took us until today to get all of that taken care of!
i think it depends from bank to bank....everybody i've talked to said they went to the bank immediately and didn't have any problems depositing even if their name wasn't changed yet. so, either we have a crappy bank or really bad luck! i would say to just go to your bank and talk to them about it!!
good luck! :)

Re: Depositing Gift Checks
We went to the bank and opened a joint account. We did not have to sign any of the checks - instead they stamped them 'Deposit Only'

Re: Depositing Gift Checks
It depends on the bank. Hub's bank just let me sign it and he deposited into his own account. No probs w/that.

Re: Depositing Gift Checks
Both of you need to sign the checks and then just deposit them-no problem. Our checks were made out the same way and it was not an issue to deposit them
