I guess maybe we did too... We still kept our separate accounts and opened up a new one with the wedding moolah. We still work off of our other accounts now and pretend the new one doesn't exist.

i think it is normal to be nervous about this sort of change. We did it when we moved in together about a year before the weddding, so it was not as drastic perhaps.
We agreed it was important that our money merge. However, we have also maintained seperate checking accounts in our name. The amounts in those accounts are not a secret from each other (they usually don't have more than $100!) but into it goes any 'play' money (little side cash I earn babysitting or whatever) I use it to buy him gifts and me clothes!

We merged our money before the wedding. Yes, it was a little traumatic but it made sense. We're not roommates, we are married and have joint expenses.
We talk about the big purchases and when either of us buys something or takes out cash we trust each other to make sound decisions. Does it get a little crazy sometimes? Yes, but if your spending styles are similar then it shouldn't be an issue. Also, you may have some friction sometimes, but if you are reasonable, you should be able to work it out.
Some people do maintain a separate account. I never saw the need to personally.

as much as i want a joint acct, i think i still want to keep a seperate one
i wouldnt feel right buying gifts for dh with 'our' money. also, just to always have backup never hurts.

We merged everything over a year before we got engaged. It was nervewracking at the time, but it helped us to save money for our house and it taught us a lot about each other.

we merged accounts when she moved with me 6 years ago... you have nothing to worry about.

We merged our accounts when we first started living together 3.5 years ago. I think it saved us a lot of headaches later on. For instance, I knew way before marrying him that he would never be the one to pay the bills. It works out really well. I do, however, have my own, separate account, as well. I couldn't add him to that one for some reason, but I kept it anyway and we opened a new one together. I hardly use it though. When we're trying to save up for a trip or something, I just put the money in there because neither of us ever touch that account.
