The show was all about the Natalee Holloway case. They showed the videos, that were recorded on hidden camaera, of the main suspect Joran van der Sloot admitting to having her body disposed of.
Just wondered what your thoughts were?
Will this case have any influence on you choosing to go or not go to Aruba in the future?

Re: Did anyone watch 20/20 last night?
OMG! I watched it, but there were a few things i had issues with during th eshow, they guy gave him pot.. so I'm sure a lot of it won't stand up in court. At least her mom said all she wanted was an answer to what happened and she got that, and its sort of the end for her.
As for Jordan being convicted, I doubt it. When the public see's evidence before the courts, it never stands up. And then his father is also a judge, so I'm sure he's got some pull there.
I just can't believe that they dumped her body, because 'she looked dead' I mean, thats completly unacceptable and they should be punished for that!!!

I know that ALL countries including our own have shady stuff going on at times, and tourism still thrives. So part of me says we should still go because one bad egg (or carton of eggs in this place) doesnt make everyone awful.
The other side of me agrees with DH: Yes she was very foolish for going out with a strange boy in a foreign country and for leaving her group. Personally, I feel that as awful as this was, this is a case that should be shown and talked about in every highschool across teh country because there are just too many simialr instances of this stuff lately; girls especially, going out and making REALLY foolish choices and ending up hurt, raped, dead or all three.
BUT at the same time, she was a kid. She did something stupid. We have ALL done stupid sh*t as kids and even as adults. Do we deserve to be murdered for it and then have it covered up BADLY and be protected because of who our daddies are? Do I want to support a country who would do that so OBVIOUSLY and remain unapologetic for it?
I don't think so... And the fact that the government knowingly covered it up even with a confession...That makes me not want to go there. Granted DH and I would stick together and not do anything screwy and we'd probably be FINE. But the fact that the government might not help us if we needed it, does make us leery.
Its so unfortunate because I always wanted to go there too! BEST weather and now DH really doesn't wnat to go; he really feels strongly about it.

Re: Did anyone watch 20/20 last night?
Joran was so arrogant the whole time. He only felt bad for himself. The host of 20/20 pointed out how he said something like 'how could this happen' and he thought he waas referring to Natalee collapsing but then he finished up his sentence with 'to me.' The part when he said he didn't lose any sleep over it was disgusting.
I am glad Natalee's mom said she was able to get some closure. I think even if he is never convicted he will have to deal with the jury of his peers in his day to day life.
Some of his story in that confession didn't really match up but I think he definitetly did it. He must have drugged her also why did he get rid of his shoes? How can they not prosecute on circumstantial evidence? I know they don't have a body but I think it is pretty clear they will never find her body.

It's a horrible thing that happened to Natalee. I've been to Aruba, to Carlos n' Charlies the bar she disappeared from. It's at the end of a dark street where guys are trying to sell you drugs as you walk buy. Tequila train as you walked into the place.
As young as she was, she could have been naive. Aruba natives are so friendly, the island's motto is 'One Happy Island'.
The bad side of the island, meaning the rough coastline and rough seas, could have made disposing of a body easy. It would have been crushed upon the rocks because the way the ocean currents and wind currents blow.
I have a feeling that she is still alive, but in South America somewhere. Keep in mind that Aruba is only 15 miles away from the coast of Venezuela. I shudder to say this, but a beautiful blond haired, blue eyed girl could easily be imprisoned as a sex slave somewhere.
I am going back to Aruba, this August actually. Maybe the government did try to cover it up, maye it didn't. Those to say something like this hasn't happened in any other paradise ? This one just got a lot of publicity.

Yea I agree with you Susie-I mean like I said originally, I know shady stuff happens EVERYWHERE and we still go to those places, but I guess we took this more personally because it WAS so publicized. Almost feels like a betrayal, especially because of the arrogant way they treated the family. Not to sound like a jerk, but the U.S. is like their top tier of tourism and the police and higher ups were willing to sacrifice all that income because of one stupid kid’s bad decisions in hurting an American girl.
I don’t know. Like I said, I can see both arguments and don’t look down on anyone who still goes , cause lord KNOWS I want to go lol, but I just can’t…not for awhile anyway until things seem to have changed. There is a difference between knowing that corruption exists and being able to turn a blind eye out of necessity because its not shoved in your face. Once it becomes SO public I personally just feel like I have to show some support for the US by not going. That’s just a personal preference.

Re: Did anyone watch 20/20 last night?
I was just discussing this with a girl I work with....
The problem is that he didn't actually confess to killing her or doing any harm to her, really. If anything, the guy who got rid of the body seems worse off than him.
Also, as for smoking pot while 'confessing', they are in the Netherlands, where pot is legal, so I don't think that matters very much.
I honestly think the kid will get away with it. Will it affect my view of Aruba? Probably not. People get killed in NYC & I still go there, ya know?

Re: Did anyone watch 20/20 last night?
we spent half of our HM in Aruba for 1 week, and DH looked up on the internet all the stuff on her, and alot of sites actually believe she is still alive, there have been spotings of her in Europe. Her mother is also known to have said on the flight to Aruba (quoted by the private pilot she hired) to saying I can't believe she's run away again, thats it this time I;m so mad at her. She did have a history of running away, and alot of the people that she was with had only been friendly with her for a few months prior to the trip, she was not 'known' to hang out with these people. SHe also had 6 months of contact with Jordan prior to coming to the Island via email, that was found on her computer at home. Again this is all info thats on the web, I don't know if its all true, but it is quite interesting if it is true

Re: Did anyone watch 20/20 last night?
Joran is a total sociopath. There was absolutely no remorse for the fact that he did absolutely nothing to help this girl.
On top of that, he didn't even confirm that she had died before giving his buddy the okay to dump her body off in the ocean. What a sicko.
Obviously, there is an element to the story that is missing. He wanted to hide something that would be found had he just left her on the beach.
The only thing he truly feels sorry about is the adverse impact this has had on his life.
There is violence and corruption everywhere, so it has zero impact on whether I would vacation in Aruba.
