I went to the DMV to do my name change. Well, showed my marriage certificate, no problem, the license will be changed. Not thinking, I did not bring the title of my car because I did not think I needed to change the name on it. It's not as if I'm going to show it to anyone & if I sell the car, I'd just sign the maiden name & the new owner takes it. Plus there is a lien on it since I haven't paid it off yet. So she asks me for the title & I said that I didn't think I had to change it, can they just change the registration. She says no, so I figure I'd have to come back - then she says 'I'm changing the registration for you' So when I ask what do I do about the title, she says 'you can leave it in your maiden name'. I'm just afraid that is not correct & someone told me the woman should never have changed my registration without changing the title. Does anyone know if that matters? Do I go back & change the title? Just concerned they will give me a hard time...thanks SORRY SO LONG!!!

Re: DMV issues - does anyone know if it matters...
yes it absolutely matters - you have to change the title and the lienholder will be notified of the change and will ask for a copy of your marriage license to verify it - do not change one without the other the woman should have never done that !
man oh man if my old DM heard about this he'd hit the roof ( i use to work for the DMV district office)
take your title to the dmv - and have them send it in for the change - or you can mail it to them -for the change.
you have to do both. she should never have taken the reg without the title

Re: DMV issues - does anyone know if it matters...
Hi, Thanks for replying. I did ask my dad about this. He is a retired police officer & knows a lot of these things. Basically, he told me to leave it as is. It doesn't matter that my title has my maiden name on it - it can have any name on it for that matter. The car could be owned by Joe Smith & registered to me. Anyway, he said that if I were to ever sell it, and I know this, all that happens is that I sign the car over to someone else. Nobody is going to ask for ID & if they do I have my old documents in my maiden name to show it was me.
So for now, I think I'm going to save myself the aggravation & leave it. I look at it that if I cannot be accountable for a DMV employee being incompetent if what she did was so wrong. They are supposed to know & if she put the paperwork through someone at some point will flag if & say 'where's the title' if the case is truly that I needed to hand it in. Thanks again for replying.

Thanks!! I'm not sure if it applies in NY, but I think I'm ok. I called the other day & the guy told me it didn't matter either, but then someone else (I called twice) said the woman shouldn't have changed it. But I think I can always change it later on & as you said, the owner's name doesn't matter. Plus I have proof with my maiden name should it come back to haunt me!!!
