DMV PITA...Maiden name as middle?

DMV PITA...Maiden name as middle?

So, a year and a half after getting married, I spent last Friday at the DMV officially changing my name. I had gone to Social Security soon after the wedding, and they made me a card with my first name, maiden name as middle, and new last name.

Now the DMV says I can't do that--if I want the maiden name as middle, I have to go to court to change it. I thought some people did succeed in making the maiden the middle--did you go to court to do it? I can't believe Social Security and the DMV aren't on the same page about this, and now I have to go back to Social Security to change that.

Hey Beth!
This isn't exactly what you posted about, but I remember reading this post from Katrina regarding name change problems with middle & maiden name. Sounds like 'they' are getting stricter now...

Ya know it's funny.... when I got my license here in NC after changing my name, the guy who was doing my paperwork RECOMMENDED that I leave my maiden name on my license 'just in case' I needed to prove who I was.

DMV is correct (surprise!) in that you do have to go to court to legally change your maiden name to middle name. I didn't go to court, I just have my maiden name as my middle name now through SS and I use it when I want to.

DMV wouldn't let me put my maiden name on my license because it wouldn't fit. You could always just put the middle initial, they would have allowed me to do that.

I wrote all three names out on the DMV form, but since they're both long names and my license can't fit all the letters, my license shows only the middle initial.

That's so strange - I took my maiden name as a second middle name and the Social Security office had no problem with it. The DMV only gave me a hard time about having two middle names, therefore having two middle initials.

I have a strange feeling it all depends on who you get at the DMV. If they feel like being a pain in the arse or not!!! Isn't that sad?

I had an easy time with name change stuff in NC as well! The guy at SS Congratulated me about 9 times on my wedding and then suggested I do the same with my names. I think it depends where you live and who you get. Funny because it was my third week here and I was just in shock at the fact that someone in a gov't office was so pleasant and accomodating!
