Do any of you have problems depositing checks if you have not yet changed your name?
Eventually I will change my last name to my DH's, but haven't done it yet. My bank has a problem with me depositing checks made out to my first name, married last name, even though I brought them a copy of the marriage license and explained the situation. I had problems with the wedding checks (wound up putting them all in DH's account), and now have some xmas checks I would like to deposit. This is with the Bank of New York...

Re: Do any of you have problems depositing checks if you have not yet changed your name?
I still haven't changed my name yet. For checks from the wedding, I didn't have any problems. My banks just told me to sign my FirstName MaidenName-DH LastName. I didn't even have to show them my marriage license. This is with Citibank and Washington Mutual.Have you tried speaking with a manager? Sometimes tellers and customer svc reps aren't authorized to do certain things. I don't understand why this is an issue, people get married everyday and this should be a something new or hard to understand.

I didn't have a problem either. I am with Washington Mutual. I signed them First Name/ Married Last name.Is this for your joint account or your own account. Ours is joint and has been for a long time so maybe that is why my bank didn't say anything.

Maybe this is just Bank of New York policy.
It is with my own account, we have a joint account at Teachers Federal but I am keeping this money separate for my tuition...

That is strange. When I changed my name to my married name and I had checks with my maiden name, they just told me to sign both names. I know this is a little different since I had the account before under my maiden name and not the married name but they should not give you a problem as long as you show them a marriage license.

I haven't had a problem. My bank just told me to have DH sign his name and I sign my maiden name.

What i did was have a joint account , so he has access to mine and i have access to his. When I receive checks that are in both our names I deposit it into his account and can always take it out. the bank offers you that option of what account you's like to take the money out of .

Maybe it's an issue bc it's not a joint account. My accounts were all joint. Can you just deposit them in the account you have with Dh and then withdraw it when the checks clear? Its annoying but it maybe a way to go around the BNY's policy.

I did not change my name, and we received many checks to Mr. & Mrs. Hislastname. I had no problem depositing (at Citibank), even though my husband wasn't with me. But I do remember that it took a long time to fill out all the depost slips!
