Do you call your MIL to chat??

Hi ladies,

Just wondering what everyone else is doing when it comes to their MIL. Do you call her just to talk? Are we, as wives, supposed to call our MILs??

I'm asking this because my MIL called my DH on his cell phone, but left a message for me, saying hello. I thought it was a bit odd, only because I didn't expect my in-laws to call me to chat, except maybe SIL or something like that.

What do you think? Are we supposed to call them or what??

Not to just chat but I do call when I have to ask a question. When she calls I do chat with her then of course she wants to talk to her baby

my MIL is like a girlfriend to me. I speak to her at least 4 days of the week to chat (to give her updates on the little one that she soooo looks fwd to) but even before he was born I would call her and shed call me to chat.
Im a mommas girl like that. I talk to my mom a zillion times a day.

I have never called her to chat. I like my MIL but she has never called me to chat either. His family is just not into the phone much.

Well, she lives in Europe, so when DH calls she send her love and I do the same. I keep in touch with them with normal mail though. I send them a card once in a while, beside those for Xmas. I feel lucky because I know they like me, and are very happy because we got married.

Yes I do! Not every day but at least once a week. I like my MIL she means well.

elena...my mil has been in Europe for the last 10 months or so...so that sounds very similar to the conversations btw DH and MIL...

but every phone call I get a kiss from her

I probably talk to her about once a week. Usually it is to ask a question to to see if FIL and her want to come by/if DH and I can pick something up. Occassionally we email each other something.

we speak about once a week. I REALLY like my MIL, and we are always watching out for each other on new books, movies, plays, products, etc. But to chat? Not really...more just to check in. She calls for me at work to check on the two of us mostly!

My MIL calls me more than I do her. She'd love a better relationship with me, but I just have to many other things going on that I can't just sit on the phone and listen to her problems. I do call once in a while.
I chat with my mom so much more!! It's just so different!

I definately chat with my mom much more. My MIL just calls (About every day on her lunch hour ) to get little updates and stuff. But I agree Cira, the mommy chat is SOO different !!

Jenn, HOW FUNNYYYY your words are MY FEELINGS EXACTLY !!! About being too mothering and too touchy feely and overwhelming !!! I thought it was just me. My MIL is way too 'Are you ok, everything OK?' EVERY SINGLE TIME SHE CALLS she has to say 'Oh, did you run for the phone? Oh am I interrupting something, yes I am? Are you sure, oh I feel bad, I know I made you run for the phone, but I just wanted to say hello....blah blah blah...' She means well and I love her, but after hearing that PHRASE EVERY SINGLE DAY EVERY TIME SHE CALLS !!!! Now I answer the phone and I say (without giving her a chance to speak ) 'HI, NO I DIDNT RUN FOR THE PHONE, NO YOU DIDNT CALL AT A BAD TIME HOW ARE YOU ?????' and if she does get the chance to ask those redundant questions, I just say 'PLEASEEEE dont ask me that again !!!!!!!' I cant help it. My nerves boil ....
Also, Jenn you'll get a kick out of this one, from the minute she had found out I was pregnant, her phone calls and even her conversations in person were 'Are you tired, do you need to rest? I'll carry that. That is too heavy for you? Are you hungry? Oh, dont lift that !' .... TO the point that I was smothered and had to bite my tongue from snapping!!!! of course Id have to say a few silly remarks like 'Im pregnant not dead ' Im also not used to the overly-motherly thing. My mother taught us to 'get up and keep walking' if we fell and shes way TOOOO overwhelming.

But in the 'cooking SAHM' way, my mother is MUCH MUCH more the motherly type. MIL is the 'never cooks' type person, which I dont mind at all, its fun to go out to eat too

No, but sometimes I wish that we had that kind of relationship. I just do not feel very comfortable calling and chatting with her. She is not as warm and easygoing as my mom is. She basically calls when she has to ask a question about something. I feel bad sometimes because she does not have any daughters, I'm hoping when we have children our relationship will improve.
