Do you change your name with ins first before DMV?

I called my ins company and they told me to go to Motor Vehicle first. I called my friend who used to work for DMV and she said you need to get your insurance changed over to new name before Motor Vehicle.

My insurance told me they couldn't change my name on it until I did it first at the DMV. Everything had to jive and they told me the DMV was the first step. BTW, my insurance went down as well since I am married which was nice!
