For those of you who did not change your last name ...
Do you get offended when people call you 'Mrs. HisLastName' or refer to the two of you as 'Mr. and Mrs. HisLastName'?
Just curious ... hope this doesn't insult anyone on here ...

Re: Do you get really offended?
I get annoyed. especially when it's family. I went through the special effort to address everyones wedding invitation to say Mr. John Smith and Mrs. Jane Smith.... just so the wives also have their names on the invitation...
Family always address it Mr. and Mrs. John Doe.
not only is my las name gone, first name is also gone, and so is my degree! uh, last I checked, it should be addressed Dr. and Mr! but, I realized early on that my family feels that female doctorates 'don't count'
I'm sure that if it was the other way around, they'd always address it dr. and mrs

I did change my name so the only thing that really bothers me is when people write things to 'Mr. and Mrs. John Smith.' I won't even go so far as to say it offends me but I definitely feel like there's a loss of identity. I'm happy to use my married name but I still have a first name!

I don't understand why people would be offended if the person did not know they DIDN'T change their name.
I dont see it as a loss of identity... I know I have my own identity even if I have HIS name now..
I guess I'm just old fashioned...

Re: Do you get really offended?
i changed my name---BUT that doesn't mean i like hearing 'Mr. & Mrs. Peter B'. he's not the only one in this marriage!
for example for our return address labels--i made sure to put Peter & Melissa B. rather than mr & mrs. just because i hate the idea of not using my name too

I agree. I could only be offended by someone if they went out of their way to be hurtful but even in that case I may not care
I have our return labels with only his name I'm the Mrs. part and have just recently received loads of Christmas cards addressed that way. I never really took notice. Think about when we sent out our invitations that is proper etiquitte. On the plus side when we see these people they call me Catherine. I find it funny that a lot of the letters are adressed to Mr. & Mrs. Robert and I think who is Robert DH is really only referred to as Bobby.

I don't get offended, but I feel a little embarrassed correcting people...like I am a bad wife for not taking his name...

Re: Do you get really offended?
I'm fairly certain my family writes mr and mrs john doe just to 'put me in my place'. they know I didn't take his name for career reasons, and I'm a pretty liberated woman. That's why they've omitted my first and last name, along with the degree.
It's one thing if the person doesn't know you, it's another if they do that to nudge you....

See ... now .... omitting the Dr. thing is in a whole different category to me!
It should be Dr. YourFirstName YourLastName and Mr. HisFirstName HisLast Name!!
Or at the very least it should be Dr. YourFirstName and Mr. HisFirstName HisLastName.
