I do not, however DH does occasionally when he drinks and it drives me crazyyy!!!!! I do not judge people for smoking, nor would it bother me that he smokes if it wasn't so terrible for you, but IS terrible for you and for that reason alone I want him to quit for good! Have any of you quit and been successful? I know its very hard but am wondering if there are any tricks? He tried the patch, but would take it off to smoke a cigarette! haha
So I am just curious how many of you smoke and the ones that quit if they know of any helpful advice?

Re: Do you smoke cigarettes?
I have tried to quit many times, but cave in everytime. I do know it's all mental. If he is not mentally ready to quit on his own, it will not work.

DH smokes, he quit last year used the patch, and was off for a good 6 months then something really stressed him out and he starting smoking. He is now trying to smoke less, cutting down might help...but I feel your pain!

Re: Do you smoke cigarettes?
dh used to smoke almost a pack a day and quit cold turkey. He quit on New Years Day. It's been almost two years and he's doing great. He did admit to me that he's had a few since he quit, only about 5 or 6 in two years. I'm still proud of him!

Re: Do you smoke cigarettes?
I used to be a smoker but have not touched a cigarette (nor do I want to) in about 5 years. I tried one time to quit, unsuccessfully, and the next time it stuck. Both times I did it cold turkey. But like a pp said, it's really soooo much mental. You have to WANT to quit, like deep down in your gut not an ounce of you wants to smoke anymore...if there's even a little left of you that's on the fence or that thinks you can handle one cig. every now and then, then it won't stick. That's why it didn't work for me the first time, i thought I wanted to quit, and i kinda did, but it was more like, 'man, I should really quit'. Not good enough. The second time I was just done, I fully realized how bad it was for me and that I needed to stop and I finally WANTED to stop. So I did and I never looked back. It was a little tough in the beginning but I always just reminded myself, 'you don't WANT to smoke, that's why you quit'.
Good Luck to your DH! He can do it, he just has to want to.

Re: Do you smoke cigarettes?
My grandparents both quit cold turkey the same day. My grandma said it was incredibly incredibly hard, but it's been over 35 years now. She said sometimes she still craves one but she thinks about how bad it is for you and how she wants to be around to see her great grandchildren etc.
I don't have any advice for you -- I've never smoked -- but I wish you all the best.

Re: Do you smoke cigarettes?
i was a casual smoker with dh a long time ago; then i was in my gyn office and saw a poster with the lining of a smoker's bronchioles on the wall (the tubes air flows into the lungs) and i just stopped. immediately. and the worst part? I work in healthcare!!! dh stopped shortly after me.
my advice? put up some nasty picture on the fridge of someone dying of lung ca or diseased lungs. or go to the Bodies exhibit; they have diseased lungs there on display.

Re: Do you smoke cigarettes?
I quit after reading a book called, 'The Easy Way to Quit Smoking.' It's not hypnosis or anything - just a book by a former smoker that breaks the addiction down for you and convinces you that smoking is just not worth it.
Honestly, it worked for me the first time - Cold turkey. Even more impressive, it also worked for my Dad, a long term smoker of 40 years, cold turkey, the first time. He tried everything else - patches, gum, pills, etc. , to no avail.
Here's the best part, YOU SMOKE while you're reading the book and when you get to the chapter on quitting, he walks you through smoking your last cigarette with him. I stopped smoking before I even reached that part (the book is that good) but that is the reason why my Dad agreed to even read the book it in the first place. He was ready to quit too by the time he got there as well.

Re: Do you smoke cigarettes?
I quit smoking now for 25 days and I feel great...
Honestly the best way is cold turkey. I set a date in my head and said that's it that will be the last day I smoke.
Quitting smoking is very hard to do.
Best of luck to everyone that is trying to quit..

Re: Do you smoke cigarettes?
I used to be a social smoker and finally stopped completely. It felt wrong since I otherwise lead a healthy life--eating well and working out. But what really made me stop for good was reading that b/c of my family history of heart disease (dad died at 40 of heart attack) and b/c I take birth control pills, if I smoke, my risk of heart disease was something crazy like 124%

Re: Do you smoke cigarettes?
I was a social smoker (only when I go out drinking really) but pretty much stopped this year. But DH hated it and I know he hated kissing an ash-tray mouth so I stopped - mostly because I love him and really know how annoying it was for him. Plus it is so bad for you. I also have been running alot and decided it wasnt worth it to ruin all my hard work towards my races by smoking.
On a side note...my DH works from a tobacco company...but does not and will not condone smoking! Crazy right!
ETA - To add I do not have an addictive personality so it was easy for me. Plus it wasnt an every day thing.

Re: Do you smoke cigarettes?
DH used to smoke and he cut down for me when we started dating. And he eventually quit but then I found out he only 'quit' when he was at home. While he was at work or out with friends he would smoke and it annoyed me. He didnt fully quit until he started working at the cancer hospital. He got a wake up call when he saw all the kids with cancer in the waiting room and he basically told himself 'These kids have cancer for no reason and IM smoking' And he hasnt touched a cig since!! I dont think he would have quit completely if he didnt start working at this place

I used to smoke a pack a day. I quit about 3 years ago. Cant say I havent smoked since. I have the occasional cigarette when I go out and drink. Sometimes I just cant help it. But I have never had the urge to buy a pack and smoke all the time ever again.....

Re: Do you smoke cigarettes?
Thank you all so much for your words of advice and encouragement!! We just got back from a week in Aruba and although we were drinking he did not smoke once! AND the night before we left it was my Aunts 50th bday party and a lot of people were smoking and everyone including DH was pretty drunk- and he 'asked' me if I minded if he had a cigarette and of course I said that I minded and so he didn't have one! That was a big thing because generally when he gets drunk he feels he neeeeeds a cigarette, as I am learning that most social smokers do.... so I am pround of him Thanks again!
