Hi again. As you all know my baby's christening is coming up. My husband's sister is the godmother. Everyone tells me that she is responsible for buying the christening outfit. Is this true? I know they can be expensive and she is just starting out as a teacher so she doesn't make much $$. She hasn't said anything about it yet. Would it be offensive for me to offer to buy it? Should I even mention it to her? I am not sure if she knows it's her responsiblilty since this is her first godchild.

I think you should mention it, better to avoid last minute misunderstanding by simply clarifying it with her. Just say that you know it`s considered traditional for the godmother to buy the outfit but you don`t want her to have to incur the expense and that you will gladly purchase it. FYI, they don`t have to be expensive at all. I`ve seen beautiful ones for $59 and $99. I was godmother to my niece last year and was looking into them. My sis in law decided to make it for the baby so it I never purchased one
. Actually I got off the hook with my nephew too, he wore my brother`s christening outfit :o) When is the christening?

The christening is next month. Can you tell me where you looked for gowns? I saw some in Babies r Us and Pennys but they weren't my style really...too frilly!
Also is it too much to have favors? We are having dinner afterwards at a restaraunt. I was going to make some balloon centerpieces and I found these cute teddy bear picture frames. My husband thinks I am going over board. I didn't think so since this is our first baby! I thought the frames were a good idea if I took her to have her picture taken in her christening outfit, I could give everyone a wallet size for the frame. Do you think its too much???

I looked at JC Penney and then I saw some at Walt Whitman Mall that were really really pretty. There is a kiosk in the middle (near Saks) where they have beautiful dresses for little girls. They carry christening and communion dresses too. I don`t think the favors are overboard at all. I had 2 nephews christened last year. At the first one she gave voltive candles in tulle with his name and christening date (not really baby related but cute) and the other gave St. Christopher medals (for the car) and candy bars with his pic and other info (which I made for them). I think the teddy bear frames sound adorable. Here`s my opinion of overboard: a cotton candy machine at the christening. I heard recently of someone who did that and thought it was a bit much.

I think you should talk to her-- it is tradition but I have 2 god daughters and havent bought an outfit yet --one used her mothers and the other had one that was bought in ireland--so talking to her is the best bet--
as for the favor--I think you should go with it-- we have been at quite a few christenings that do favors--and your isea sounds really nice

my 2 cents..
Def mention it to her..and let her know what your taste is and that it need not be expensive.
You can even find on -line stores that sell this stuff.
I bought the christening suit for my godson at Tri STate Flea market- ran about $75 if I recall correctly.
Ther eis one booth there that sells all that stuff- gowns, tuxes, socks, bibs, bibles, etc. Prices range from $50 & up for the outfit.
FAVORS: def do it if your budget allows. Had one at every baby shower & christening I went to. My friend did goody bads for any of the kids that attended and put in pencils, little cars, yo-yo's etc
Totally up to you..

wow .. I had no idea ...
when we were asked to be godparents for my nephew .. I had no idea it was tradition for the godparents to purchase the christening outfit, and I had even asked my brother and sister-in-law what we needed to do as godparents .. it`s our first and only! And they didn`t mention this 'tradition.' So either they didn`t know either, or they didn`t want the responsibility of finding an outfit to be placed on us.

oh ... 2 more things ..
my mom didn`t mention getting an outfit either, and she definitely would have brought it up somehow if my brother and sister-in-law felt awkward abut telling us this was our responsibility. She would have suggested her and I go out shopping together or something.
