Does this info ever scare anyone?

fertility info

I have never felt my biological clock ticking, but I have been on the LIF boards recently and never truly realized how hard it was to actually start a family! There are people who are TTC for over 2 years! This info scares me. This chart above drops you fro 86% chance of getting pregant ages 20-24 to 68% starting at age 25....I find that a little scary! Anyone else?

Wow when you put it like that, I guess it does. I had one doctor tell me go ahead and start TTC in your 30's it's no big deal and if you have problems we will run tests. Then I went to another doctor who stating the sooner you start TTC the better. Why wait until your mid- 30's, it will be hard. I don't know what to think! I'm still on BC and married a year this month and wanted to be married for at least 3 years before TTC, but I'm already in my early 30's. I don't want to rush b/c of my age, but don't want to wait too long and then end up regretting it.

it is scary. And yeah alot of ppl dont realize how hard it can be. I forgot the statistics i read recently but its about 1 out of every 4 women will have difficulty, maybe even higher.

I know people who went through this so not surprised at all

and yeah i do think about it, cant say im scared but i am preparing myself for that just in case.

This is exactly the reason why i will never say ' i want to have a baby by spring of 09' or a baby within a year or anything like that. I wont plan it like that. There will be a time when DH and i will start trying but im going into knowing how hard it can be and preparing myself for that

i never realized it could be so hard to get PG. We're not trying (we're sitll actively NOT trying) but i just assumed you go off BC and *tada!* you are PG. A little scary to think otherwise

yea, its scary. i try not to dwell on it too much or else it will just cause unnecessary worry for right now. none of us know exactly what will happen but i dont want to spend too much time being scared. im hopeful that i wont have trouble but none of us are promised anything. theres a plan bigger than me tho and i just have to trust that whats meant to happen will happen, ya know.

Also remember that just because you're younger doesn't necessarily mean it will be easier...there are millions of young 20-somethings out there who have difficulty conceiving. Yes, increasing age is another factor contributing to difficulty in conceiving but there are also numerous other things...unknowns even. I forget the exact percentage but even an otherwise normally healthy of-age couple only has something like a 20% chance of conceiving each time they try...that doesn't mean it will take forever, it may it may not, but it just also means it may not happen right away. That's why Denise's point about saying you want to be pregnant at a certain time or have your first child when you're both age XYZ......you never know if it will happen then.

ETA: And then there's the cases where women may think they have all the odds stacked against them for numerous reasons...age, condition, health, environment, etc...and they get pg right away. Again, you never know..but don't let yourself get too worried about it until you're trying and there's reason to worry....enjoy the process in the meantime.

yes, this is the reason we decided to have our son first. We already knew we were going to get married but I didn't want to wait until after the planning and wedding and then be 35. I'm 6 yrs. older than DH and I had 2 friends that were having issues conceiving in their 30's, so I got scared. Our son is 2 now and he's amazing.

For us, it was the best decision.

definitely doesnt happen that way at all, some yes but a large percentage of women have a very difficult time. Even then some women have problems with miscarriages and can go through a real difficult time. I know somebody who did get pregnant after just 1 try but she lost her baby at 10weeks, they are trying again now so hopefully this time it goes well.

Try not to worry. Everyone is different. I just had a friend get pregnant her first month trying and she is in her early/mid thirties.

i think that the medical world puts so much stress on women conceiving that half of them can't because of it and all these statistics...i know at least 3 people who had issues TTC....adopted a baby...and then BAM! got pregnant when they weren't even trying....or people told by doctors they'd never have kids...one of whom now has 5! I don't want kids...but i feel bad for all the women out there who want them & get crazed with this info.

this def does scare me a little, but the medical field is expanding SO much& there are SOOOOOO many new ways that they are coming up with now a days to help with infertility!!

doctors told my aunt that she would NEVER EVER be able to have a child... after a long road of infertility specialists and 2 miscarriages, she has a beautiful healthy baby!!

granted, its a lot of $$$ - but i feel like if me & DH are ever in that position, we would figure out a way to afford it if it meant that i would be able to conceive a child

Re: Does this info ever scare anyone?

If it makes anyone feel better, my sister got married at 35 almost 36, and got pregnant at 37, a couple of months into trying. She takes very good care of herself, and her doctors told her that she had the body of a 25 year old, and that was helpful. It does vary from person to person and stressing out about it doesn't help anything. She's stressed now because she's 38, and did want to have a second child, but doesn't know if she can handle them so close in age -- my nephew is 15 months!
I'm 34 and on the pill. We do want to start trying soon, but first we want to settle in to being married, find a place, etc. Also, we have a big international trip booked in February, and I don't want to pregnant for that, so maybe we'll start trying after that.

That happened to my HS bf's parents. His parents had him at 18, waited a while to get PG with #2 and then tried for years and couldn't. they went on fertility drugs and still nothing. They adopted two kids (ages 7 and 11) and right after the adoption was finalized got pregnant with twins. They went on to have another baby when my friend was in his early 20s.

Please don't let it scare you. Yes, it CAN be harder than you ever imagined BUT it CAN also be easier you know?

I have wonderful role models. No one in my family ( my generation ) had children before age 30 and no one had problems. Does that mean that I won't have problems? There is no way of knowing BUT I have hope on my side!!!

my aunt had 7 miscarriages before adopting my cousin. she could not carry a baby. 7 years after they had my cousin, she got pregnant.

i really do believe that a lot of the issues are stress related at times. when my sister had issues the first thing the doc did was tell her to lessen her 2 hr each way commute b/c stress is a factor.... in her case it didn't help but i think once the weight of wanting a baby SO bad is alleviated a little, it gets better to have another.
