does this type of thing even exist?

does this type of thing even exist?

hubby and i are debating on taking a road trip in august to Chicago.

I want to find a website where it'll tell me how often i'll need to gas up and how much it'll cost. i know every car's miles per gallon is different, but i could've sworn there was some type of website where it'll tell you: Bronx, NY to Philadelphia, PA: total mileage xxx, total gas cost, $xxx or SOMETHING to that effect.

no? am i crazy? did i just invent the coolest thing ever?

i want to avoid driving there as much as possible. plane tickets aren't that much prettier now a days but if it's gonna cost the same arm and a leg to fly and drive, i will def push for flying.

i'm really not sure about how to find out the gas prices - but i wanted to let you know Dave & I do road trips EVERY YEAR - so let me know if you need help planning!

We've actually done 3 trips to Chicago!

Do you know how many miles per gallon your car gets? well, you can go to mapquest or google maps & get the mileage for the trip then divide it by the # of mpg your car gets.

Ex:
500 mile trip
you car gets 21 mpg

that'll mean it'll take you 23.8 gallons to make the trip. If gas is $4.40 a gallon, the cost = $104.72 plus tolls.

you can also try HERE > My DH uses this for long trips with his truck.

Not sure about a website, but do you keep a log of your fill ups in your car now? I keep a small notebook where I write down every time I fill up: date of fill up, total vehicle mileage, trip meter mileage (zeroed out each time I fill up), cost per gallon of gas, and number of gallons it took to fill up. Kind of looks like this for each entry:

6/12/08 26,548 $67.54
$4.09 9/10 265.5 16.513g

Then I just figure out what my avg mpg is for the car. I always know when I've got to bring it in for a tune up based off of the gas mileage fluctuations.

I know it sounds tedious but once you get into the hang of it, it works!

Good luck!
