does your jewler charge you to rodium dip your white gold ring?

I was not charged the first time I did this, but I just went to pick up my ring after having it dipped the second time (it's been 7 months since the first) and they charged me $17! THe manager told me that they always charge and that maybe the person I gave it to the first time didn't know. I just thought it was weird, and I thought I remembered some of you saying that it was free....

thanks!

My FIL is a jewler so I get mine done for free. He does charge others though. Regular customers he either gives a discount to or doesnt' charge them (for good business).

I've never had to pay to have my ring dipped. I've had it done 3 times in the 3.5 years that I've had it.

My jeweler don't do this so he sends me to a guy downstairs (diamond district). I pay $5 and although my ring is platinum I did it once to shine it up and I watch it like a hawk, even though they never let it out of my site

I think it's more likely that since they have to polish it first before you dip it, that is what you are paying for. It is not good for your ring to have this done too often. My FIL won't let me dip mine for another year. The polishing takes too much metal off if you do it too often.

I need to have this done to my ring. Do they have to take the diamond out of the setting or can it be left in?

What exactly is this process? Is this to keep white gold from yellowing?

my white gold wedding band yellows (all white gold does) - but only on the inside (like the palm side) . My band has diamonds set inside the the gold (picture a very antique-y ring) and they don't have to take them out to dip it. I honestly don't know the process, but it seems like they dip it in the rodium and then polish it. It looks beautiful - and i don't think it wears down the metal because my ring is engraved inside and that hasn't worn off at all and no one has warned me about it.
