I wish I could help you, but I've never even been camping with or without Arnold. I understand how you feel about the kennel though. Is there a friend or relative who could watch them for you? As we speak I'm dog sitting for my friend's beagle. I'd watch your dogs too if Patrick would let me, but I think you mentioned that one of yours is an akita, and Patrick would freak. He thinks Bugsy (the beagle) is big! This from the man who insisted that anything smaller than a rottweiler isn't a dog, and is now hopelessly in love with a 4 pound toy poodle. LOL

Re: Dog Owners
Have gone camping with a group of people several times- and 4-5 times with couples who had a dog. The key is ..is this dog well behaved amongst strangers/friends...and does he bark a lot.
If he is well behaved- doesnt act aggressivley aqnd doesnt bark that much - then it is a go. Just be sure to bring a long leash. Esp if you cant trust him to not run off.
If he is 'crazy' as you describe, or barks a lot, your friends or the park ranger will ask you to leave. Quiet hours in the camp grounds usually begin around 9pm- no radios, no loud singing, no barking. Plus, if the dog isn't well behaved with strangers, you will be spending most of your time restraining the dog and not enjoying the whole camping experience.
One of the dog families we went camping with, brought their dog on a hike with all of us and it was the MOST fun we had. Dogs do make the experience even better!

Arnie is black. We are actually talking about maybe getting another one, and I'd love an apricot or maybe a red poodle. They are such smart dogs and no shedding!! Arnold wants to be Bugsy's (my friend's dog who we are watching) friend so badly, but Bugsy has been completely ignoring him. It's kind of funny to wach him pretend Arnold is invisible!

Re: Dog Owners
I know I shouldn't be on 'this side' yet, but...I went camping this past weekend for three days and brought my 90lb Rottweiler. She is extremely well-behaved and rarely barks. She basically slept on the dirt the whole time. We did have her on a leash though, because she does love chasing small animals that scutter by. We took her hiking with us as well, which was not the best idea, because the trails were crowded (we were up in Watkins Glen) and most people are terrified of Rottweilers and were trying to avoid us! No one knows what a mush she really is!
The other couple we went camping with brought their little chihuahua. That dog is mean and a yapper, so they had a miserable time trying to control him. If your dog is well-behaved around people, then I'm sure you'll have a great time, but only you know your dog's behavior! Good luck!
