Has anyone done this and were you happy in the end? I am strongly considering going this route, b/c I can't seem to be satisfied with any of the make-over trials done mostly at the cosmetic counters. So, I thought of doing my own make up and practicing during the next 6 months?

Re: Doing your own make up on the day of?
That's what I ended up doing. I had two make up trials and I probably looked as ridculous as I felt. So I went to the Bobbi Brown make up counter in Bloomingdales and asked them for an application consultation. They worked with me picking out colors and showed me how to apply them. Then I practiced for a few weeks. I thought it worked out fine. I felt like I looked more natural then with any of the trials.
You can make appointements at any counter for the consultations. I am not sure about the purchase requirements. I ended up buying most of the colors from Bobbi Brown.
Good Luck!

alina, shamma posted tiips on this about 6 weeks ago. Do a search, it was a great post. If you want to try a pro ... fm me ... the makeup artist I used was terrific. She did a very subtle look on one of my BM's. I went back twice to make some changes. I've never been happy with salon make-overs & I loved the result!

Thank you all, anyone else? I have been so far to Lancome, Clinique and Mac, and all have overdone it! I feel like the amnt of make up that they put on you makes one look much older than they really are!!! I'll keep on trying, and practicing!!!

i really wanted to do my own makeup b/c i felt noone else knew better than me what works with my face....but i was afraid of being too nervous on the big day so i got a makeup artist....well, that was a bad move....she used colors totally different than my trial and i ended up looking like a clown...long story short, i washed it off after she left and did it myself...everyone raved about the great job my MA did...so if you think you will have a steady hand, then go for it!

Re: Doing your own make up on the day of?
I didn't do my own but really considered it after having a bad trial. I like experimenting and playing with makeup normally so I figured i could do it better...I have never gotten my makeup done professionally for any bridal party I was in and always get complimented on my makeup!
Two weeks before I got married I found a makeup artist I loved. Her name is Laura and she is the manager at Perscriptives in Bloomingdales in Roosevelt field. She is so sweet. When I left the trial (at the counter), I did feel like I had a lot of makeup on but I took pictures and when I saw the pictures I realized it was the right amount to look right in pictures (before and afters in different lights make a difference). My mom also got hers done by her and asked for no face makeup and the Laura did that and my mom looked great! Also, the makeup lasted all day! I have pictures from the end of the night and it didn't move (except lipstick of course). I think if I did it myself it would never have stayed that well!

I did my own. I decided to spend the money on the makeup and do it myself than having it done. I did everything very natural..soft eyes, cheeks, but then made a statement with my red lips! It came out great. I felt good and did not have to worry about looking unlike my normal self with some heavy applied makeup. It worked for me!

If you are going to do it yourself I would suggest you doing a) a trial run and then getting your most brutally honest friend to give you a critical examination and b)photographing yourself close up.
99% of women have no idea how to apply makeup correctly and its just too hard to be a good judge of your own work.
If your brutally honest friend gives you the go ahead AND the makeup lasts all day AND photographs well - then you're set.

Stef, will FH work for a critique? LOL, he hates when I put make up on... But we're slowly working on finding the right mix!

Definitely not!! If you FH is anything like my husband, he would suggest I go completely without makeup or close to it.
As they should, a FH is going to think you look beautiful no matter what. You need someone who can say without hesitation 'you look like a hooker' or 'you look like a ghost' or whatever. I dont think your FH would do that right?

Re: Doing your own make up on the day of?
Stef, its funny, but he has made similar, but less harsh comments after my make up trials!!! But to some degree he is similar to your husband in terms of 'no make up = good' rule.
I am more worried that he'll miss the 'right' amount of make up stage... For example, after yesterday's Clinique makeover, he didn't notice that I had foundation / blush on, which is actually good, b/c I also liked how the foundation felt... But forgot take pictures!!!
I have to try Clinique again, b/c last night I was sensitive to their eyeshadow base, and had to stop at midpoint, right before putting the eyeshadow.
But I'll agree to your point, and will search for the most critical person to evaluate.

I just wanted to add that I used Jillian from Gorgeous Faces. She advertises on this site, and she was really great. I have never had my makeup done by anyone else but myself - she has great products and really works with you to get the look you want. I wish I had an excuse to have her do my makeup again!

Re: Doing your own make up on the day of?
I did my own. About 3 months before the wedding, i went to a make-up counter and had them help me pick the colors that looked good on me. I did my make-up myself, using the new stuff, for our engagement shoot so I could see how it looked in photos. I loved it so I did it myself for the wedding. I was very pleased with the way it came out and I purchased all the make-up and am now much more confident every time I have to do make-up for myself.
I feel like I really know what I'm doing.
Good luck.

It really depends on you. I'm normally pretty good with makeup but that day I was a nervous wreck and probably would have applied eyeliner to my lips. Anyway I enjoyed having makeup put on me...it felt somewhat like being pampered.

Re: Doing your own make up on the day of?
I had 2 make up trials that I hated - too much foundation and eye make up. I was out at a mall one day and Clinique was having a big event with about 8 trial stations set up outside the store entrance. I had a trial that looked great and bought several things, tried it at home a few times and was happy with the results. I did my own hair too, after a few failed trials - again, just worked on it at home a few times and it held the curls all day.
