Dominican Republic

DH & I are planning a mini trip to The Dominican Republic. If anyone has gone, where have some of you ladies stayed.

Also, what airline/airport did you fly out of? I checked American Airlines and they have all these crazy layovers that make the flight a total of 13 hours one way!

Jet Blue doesn't fly to Punta Cana either

We went to Sun Village it was really nice. The beach was not that great, but we didn't mind it we like to stay by the pool anyway.

Punta Cana Paradisus.. the new section the Reserve is gorgeous although it's not beachfront. The older 'renovated' section is on the beach. I'd stay in the Reserve if I could.
There are direct flts to Punta Cana.. on American and maybe Delta.
There is a new Paradisus resort which is to die for but the water at the beach has sea grass.

Re: Dominican Republic

I went to Puerto Plata and flew with American. The only problem is that many airlines stop offering direct flights to certain destinations to save money.

Try Jet blue, I think they fly direct to Santiago and to the Puerto Plata airport. If you fly into Santiago you take a cab that will run you about $50-$70 and its a 2 hr drive.
If you fly to Puerto Plata its a $35 cab and only 1/2 hr drive but the ticket is at least $200 or more to land there.

I stayed at the Riu Merengue. Service was great, loved the food and our room. The beach was great too, I hear that Punta Cana side is better, but way more expensive. I paid $1200 for all inclusive 4 star hotel, and flight for DH and I for 5 nights, 6 days. This was 3 years ago, but Riu offers really good prices and I got it during a special they were having.

I took 1 tour outside the complex to some awesome waterfalls. I loved DR!!!

Good luck with the planning.

Re: Dominican Republic

I've stayed at Paradisus and Excellence both in Punta Cana.
Check with American, they usually have at least one direct flight to/from Punta Cana.
Otherwise change planes in Puerto Rico. When we've done layovers, they were usually about 2 hours, nothing more than that.
Try a Liberty Travel store - you might be better off working with them for a package deal and better airline schedules.

Re: Dominican Republic

We flew Delta direct to Punta Cana -- and stayed at the Iberostar Bavaro resort.

Only word to describe Punta Cana--AMAZING!!!

Probably one of our favorite spots we've ever been to--great food, beaches, weather, and people. Our resort was unreal and we had a fantastic time!

Re: Dominican Republic

my sister in law just got back from PC last week. They stayed at Iberostar and loved it. I looked into going there and if I ever get to go, I'd want to stay at one of the following:
Paradisus (either one)
excellence resort
Majestic resort
Dreams

Those are all inclusives. there are also a couple of none AI resorts that look incredible!

Re: Dominican Republic

I went once to the Melia near Santo Domingo - and I would not advise it. We didn't leave the resort, and were told not to - not sure if it's the same in all parts of DR, but it certainly was in SD. I got sick on the trip, and I thought the food was horrible. (Doesn't help that it was cloudy or rainy most of my time there.) Just not a great trip for me and I would not advise any Melia resort because of it, but I do not know if the other Melia resorts are good ... it's a chain.

Re: Dominican Republic

The part about getting sick is from the water. Mostly everyone I know gets sick, I got sick the second day but then was fine.

Check tripadvisor.com for reviews on any of the hotels you are thinking of visiting. They also have tons of pics from real people.
