Just thought I would post what I read in Readers Digest this morning-- (now I know that this is an average for the US but come on..)
Reception 7246
Rings 4042
Photo/Video 1263
Gown 790
Flowers 775
Music 745
Invite 374
MOB Dress 198
Other(veil/limo/fees/etc) 3441
Total 18,874 for 186 guests!!!!
Some of it can be realistic--but how are you feeding that many people on 7246!!!
Just thought everyone would enjoy another perspective

Dont we wish this is what it cost ;-)
Laura;
I have never seen the full, overblown cocktail hour anywhere but in the NY area. Everywhere else it's always been some passed trays, and a smaller table, mostly cheeses, fruits, veggies, etc. Never all the hot dishes and the number of dishes. I'm sure that adds a good $15 or more per plate, so that's got to be where some of the savings come from.

Many of the weddings I've been to outside of NY were actually just like the cocktail hour. No sit down dinner. Just hor de vours. In fact at my cocktail hour many people overate because they thought that was it -- they didn't realize there was a sit down dinner to follow.

We had the same thing with one of Jeremy cousins-- the wife is from S Carolina and we had went to there wedding a few months earlier and there rehearsal dinner was an amzing BBQ and there wedding was a cocktail hour--so when they came to our wedding his cousin (the husband) came up to us in the cocktail hour going on and on about the food and we told him about dinner and he flipped--it was really cute!!
Only on LI

Actually...
mine cost about that. A little less. I didn't have that many people though, 70 guests.
I wonder if NY-ers tend to have larger weddings or if it's just the 'cost of living' expense

New Yorkers do it Better!!!
It's all a bit lavish and over the top, but I just went to a wedding in Maryland over the weekend where the cocktail was, like you said, a table with veggies, cheeses, crackers and fruit and just a few passed hors d'oeuvres.
Maybe I'm biased, but I love Long Island weddings!!!!!
