dress preservation

dress preservation

I recently dropped my wedding dress (I know, but better late than never) off at a cleaners to get it cleaned. The price to get it cleaned and in a box is $250. Is it really necessary to get the dress boxed? Also, is this a typical price, or is it on the high side? I'm torn on just putting it in the bag it came in and storing it in my closet and boxing it.
Opinions please!
PS it's great to be over here on te other side of things

I am going to send my dress to get cleaned and preserved with www.wedclean.com for $100. This place was recommend by some brides on this board and supposedly the weddingchannel.com also.

I think I paid $150. The box has a cut out, which allows you to see the dress.

I think $250 is overpriced. My local cleaner said $180 w/ a box, and the place I ended up taking it was $70 hanging, a little over $100 w/ a box.

I dropped mine off at the place we got the tuxes from (they also own the cleaners next door) and it was free to get it cleaned, $50 to get it preserved and boxed. So, I paid the $50. I knew what a bargain that was considering it probably would have been about $150 anywhere else!

Hey Heather ... I've been wondering where you were! I never got to wish you Congratulations, so here goes ... CONGRATULATIONS!

I brought my dress to the local cleaners that has a great reputation and it cost me $125. I think $250 is a bit to pricey, but you want to make sure you get your dress cleaned by someone who can box and perserve the dress correctly!

I was thinking of using wedclean too but I have an irrational fear of the post office losing my dress :(

I used a local cleaner in East Northport and it cost me $120 with the box (with the see-thru panel) and the acid free bag to put it in. It took about three weeks. I find it's much easier to store and carry in the box (especially if you don't have a lot of closet space).

thanks!

A big thank you for your opinions. I decided to get it cleaned and pressed on the hanger.
Cira- Thank you, and Congrats to you too! I have not been too good about getting on the computer. Now that school has started ( I'm teaching 4th grade) and I'm taking on the role as wife, things always seem busy!

Re: thanks!

i know that you may want to get it cleaned, but here is a tip- my mother did NOT get hers cleaned she just put it in a box- wrapped in tissue paper and it stayed SPARKLING white for 28 years now- i almost wore it becuse it was in such good condition. Some times the cleaning products that they use to preserve it turn the dress yellow.
