Eating before or after workouts?

Eating before or after workouts?

Can you please tell me what you do? I have read two different opinions online and Iam so confused.

#1 Said eating before gives you energy to workout

#2 Said eating after is better because you will burn the calories faster since your metabolism will be up.

this question was asked on LIF under diet & fitness and this one girl replied (she's a trainer) I copied it:

'Your workout is more effective if you eat first. If you're body is still fasting from the night before, if it less willing to give up those calories. I often have to send clients home because they can't handle their workouts when they haven't eaten breakfast. You should defintely, without question, eat something before you workout in the morning.'

honestly it depends on your time/schedule, you never want to eat right before a workout or right after....
that said you really should eat within 1 hour after working out to prevent muscle damage or loss, even if its just a little protein snack....
hth

fm me if you have more questions

on Monday & Tuesday i tried to work out in the morning before eating anything and i got lightheaded both days. Today i had a bowl of cereal and then worked out about an hour later and i felt much better. HTH!

I usually go right after work, so I eat when I get home. If I go on the weekends, I eat a small breakfast. I find that when I eat a regular meal and then workout, I get stomach pains

i think it depends on you. i got back to the gym this week and went first thing in the morning on mon and tues....since it was like 5:30am, i didn't want to eat my full breakfast so instead i had a half of a zone bar before i got to the gym and i was fine until i got home. tonight i'll go after work and then just eat dinner when i get home.

i think you have to do what feels best for your body. i find that if i workout on a totally empty stomach then i get very lightheaded and have no energy.

I usually a piece of fruit or granola bar if Im not feeling energized because I know I will be to exhausted to really get a good work out.

When I go in the morning and roll out of bed I dont eat although I do try to drink some juice or something like that

Re: Eating before or after workouts?

If I am going on a long 8-10 mile run, I dont really eat much...an apple, etc. Only because I cramp up if I do.

HOWEVER - at night I prefer to eat before the gym. Just because I dont like waiting till after because then I am famished and gorge / plus I hate eating late. Either way, I dont think it matters but I say eat earlier than later - it helps!

Also - sometimes after the gym I have a protein shake or a piece of fruit. The sugar from the fruit is supposed to start repairing your muscles.

I was always told to eat some kind of lite carb before a workout (It gives you energy) and something very rich in protein afterwards too b/c it helps replenish you

I used to do a whole wheat english muffin with a little butter or jam if I worked out in the morning.

This is right, but you shouldn't eat a whole meal. You need the food for energy, so something like a bottle of water and a granola bar or yogurt would be good.

But I see you're asking about dinner. I would eat a small snack - piece of fruit, granola bar, yogurt just so you're okay, but only if you're hungry. I always tell myself I'm going to workout when I get home but I end up getting hungry on the train ride home and famished when I walk in the door. I really need to start eating an apple on the way home to help.
