Education advice

Education advice

I have been trying to decide on what I am going to be for the rest of my life...and this year is the year that I MUST decide which direction I should go towards. I can do a degree in Health administration, Nursing OR communications/business. I feel equally about the three. Can anyone give any opinions good or bad about them? I will be attending Stonybrook. I appreciate it. Any advice would be awesome...Im giving myself a panic attack

Re: Education advice

what do you eventually want to do with the comm/business degree?

I worked in that field for years... on the production end though.

First of all relax All I can say is that my mom and sister are nurses and they love it. My sister went to Stoneybrook too! I think you just have to really think about what you will be happiest doing and go from there. Good luck in your decision

right now, I'm about to start graduate school... but I worked in post production television as a producer... although I was on the broadcast end, I worked with Account Execs and sale people on the advertising end.

its a grueling, cut throat business...

the best advice I can give you is what would fit *you* as a person... if I may echo renee's EXCELLENT advice, do what makes you happy

you have to figure... you'll be doing what you're doing for the REST of your life... so something that feels good... for me.. making sure a 30 second spot on toothpaste to LA on time, wasn't ER... I wasn't saving lives...

I'll just add my 2 cents:

I took the Health administration and management course at Stonybrook. It was good!

I think you have to do what will make you happy but I will say you can't go wrong in the health field. There is always a demand. There is a HUGE demand for nurses right now so you can get a job without a problem. Then you can always go on to your Nurse Practitioner degree and make booku $. Good luck in your decision!

Agree with these comments. With baby boomers getting older there is an increasing demand for nurses and others in the health industry. Don't think u can go wrong here.

I agree with the others and say take advantage of having the choice to do what you want and go with what you think will make you happy and be the most rewarding. As someone who is getting their MBA, I can't say I'll be saving lives either, and even though it's the right move career wise I sometimes sit in my office and wish I could forget the last 10 years and go back to school for education or something and make a difference.

what i do isn't exactly rewarding, but the money is good and the work is fairly interesting. I always think you can't go wrong with a business degree but if you feel more strongly about nursing then go for it.

I think you should ultimately do what makes you happy.

And to add in...my mom was a nurse then a professor of nursing, now she is in charge of a nursing school. I honestly think being a nurse is a wonderful career. If I could stand blood and needles, I'd be right there with you.

In college I was a communications major and now I'm a teacher so I don't exactly have the best advice for you.

Best of luck to you! Let us know what you decide on.

Not to mention that nurses are in demand all over the country and that trend hasn't changed for a while.

Hey Kristin,

There are plenty of pros and cons to nursing. yes they are in demand. Yes they make good money, but the con is you work really, really hard for it. The paper work never ends, patients are sicker than ever before and continue to get sicker.

Nursing is rewarding but it has to come from inside. Patients and their families are stressed and don't always understand why you are doing something, or appreciate what you do.

The hours are flexible but again, family/friends don't understand. After I work all night I want to sleep just like FH wants to sleep after he works all day, but it doesn't work that way. Hospitals are 24/7 so yes you have to work some weekends and holidays. And the biggest things that FH doesn't understand.... I work full time too! I work long days but less per week but I put in the same number of hour as he does but the house work isn't divided as so.

But I love nurisng. Some nights are terrible. And no, not all patients sleep at night!! LOL. I love the theory and seeing how it works in practice. The human body is so interesting. The knowledge you gain is a precious gift for you and your family.

I love talking with my patients and wish I had more time to do so. I love working the longer shift and having more days off.

And when I start my family I can still make decent money working part time and be able to stay with my babies. Many work weekends when DHs are home and stay with the children during the week.

There are pros and cons but it can be a great career if it's a good fit. FM me if you want.
