Did anyone's husband get promoted? I believe they are up to around 195 already - it's going very fast -I guess they have to pass a lot of people by b/c of the college credits. We thought it would take about a year and a half

Re: FD Wives
Hey Tara,
That is about right ALOT of guys on the list do not have college. I think Elizabeth's husband may have been promoted already.
I'm just curious as to how it will affect our DH's when all the eligibles finally get all their college credits

Re: FD Wives
Hi, You are both right about the credits issue! Derek should have been promoted, in fact he will have the amount he needs next weekwhen his class officially ends!!! But they said he needed to have them as of 2 weeks ago!! I feel very very badly b/c he is so close and I know it is bothering him alot. The worst part is that they were considering giving them a dispensation b/c alot of guys had to slow down or cease taking classes due to 9/11 but then it was decided to stick with the original requirement. It seems wrong to me but I guess I am not impartial.
I think the guys that are passed over keep moving to the top of the list, they don't lose their seniority on the list.
[rant]BTW, believe me, I am all for people getting a college education but it seems ridiculous that they have these requirements for these guys to get promoted. How easy is it for someone who has a family and an ever changing schedule to sign up for and commit to being at a class at a specific time every week? And if you are a Lt., your schedule is less flexible than a firefighter's b/c there are limited amounts of Lts. per firehouse that you can trade hours with to be able to make the commitment to the classes too. And don't even let me get started on those who are picking up second jobs to make ends meet....[/rant]
I know my fellow FDNY wives understand!!

Re: FD Wives
Elizabeth,
I'm sorry for Derek, I know how much time and effort is put into preparing for the exams. What hurt Steve the most was the seniority issue, which is what I have a HUGE problem with. In the FD you get full seniority for the exam when you are on the job 10 years, however if you were NYPD before FDNY they will allow those years worked as credit for seniority. Say you were a police officer for 7 years and a firefighter for ONLY 3 years you have full seniority on the test which IMO is SO WRONG.
In essence a firefighter with little or no experience can be our DH's boss
