Feeling a little down today, blah!

Feeling a little down today, blah!

So i started working out again this week, but my body seems to be in this horrible cycle. I worked out so hard last summer and only lost about five pounds, but i looked ok. As soon as i stopped working out i gained back the weight in about a week and have since gained about five more during the winter. The weight is mostly in my legs and dh talks about it a lot. I know he's not doing it to hurt me, but he thinks that i'm like a kid who doesn't want to work out. Like he thinks i'm saying that i'm working out, but secretly hiding somewhere with a box of donuts! Meanwhile i'm working my *** off! He keeps saying things like 'summers almost here' and 'you know you're gonna have to be in a bathing suit soon'. So after doing some research, I realize that its most likely my birth control thats contributing to this weight gain and the change in my metabolism. But when i mention this to him he gets upset and basically says that i should go off of it, but he's not thrilled and most likely won't want to have sex if he has to use a condom. I told him that I want to switch to a lower dose birth control, not go off of it completely. I don't like using condoms either, but its not fair that i have to mess with my hormones and screw with my body! Well I made an appointment today with a GYN who is supposed to be really good. (i've always gone to Planned Parenthood, until i got married and now have insurance). The only thing is, she's booked until June! I made the appointment anyway since she's supposed to be great. Here's my problem. I want to stop using my bc now and then switch to something else in June. I feel like I'm working out for nothing as long as i'm on my BC. I want to tell dh this, but i know he's going to get all weird and quiet and say 'do what you have to do', but not really be fine with it. Sorry this is so long, but its really bothering me. Should I just stay on the bc until June or stop it now? What do you have to do when you switch? Are you supposed be off of it for a while and then go on another one, or do you just switch right away? Thanks for letting me vent!

aw im sorry your feeling down! I had this same problem with BC, gained weight, it suucked!

I did switch a few years back from ortho tri cycline, to yaz.. this personally helped with my weight gain! and I just switched after my last pack was done.

If you don't want kids right now, you would need some sort of contraceptive.

Not trying to be personal, but depending on how far off kids are in your future, or if not at all .. I think mederma would be a great thing... my SIL did it, and she loves that she doesn't have to remember a pill or use condoms etc.

and if you don't want to do that, maybe try a diaphram or something else, if you don't want to switch till june. HTH

i struggled with this too- I dont think its a good idea to go off what you are on now till you see a doctor, there is a thread on here with recommendations of gyno's- maybe you can find one that will see you sooner.

I actually came off my BC about 2 months ago because of the weight gain. About a year before the wedding I stopped taking it because I knew of the weight gain it caused. About a month before the wedding I went back on to ensure I wouldn't have my friend while on my honeymoon.. And I can honestly say that going back on it was the worst thing I could have done... I lost about 20 pounds for the wedding and felt great. I didn't really work out, I just watched what I ate.. I'm not the tallest girl, plus I'm curvy so 5 pounds on me is a lot... Since the wedding and going back on BC I've gained about 15 pounds.. I feel gross!
To answer your questions... if you want to go on BC then thats your decision. The hormones really messed with me but everyone is different..
If you plan on going back on I would just stay on because June is another 2 months away... when you switch you just go from finishing one pack onto the new one...
I originally started with Ortho tri cyclne low and that made me gain about 30 pounds, I then switched to Yaz and lost about 15.. So changing from one brand to another won't be an issue.. Ask your doctor what other brands there and research them..

good luck! Hope that helped a little...

thank you! I never thought of using a diaphram, but i'm definitely going to look into it. We want to start trying for a baby at the end of next summer (2010), so i probably won't be on it for too much longer anyway.

I toally know where you are coming from. I'm going through the same thing. I started WW while I was off BC and when I started it my weight loss slowed down A LOT, even with me starting a workout routine.

I agree with the PP if you aren't looking to get preg. def. look into other contraceptive options. Maybe you could call back the GYN office and see if they can call you if they have a cancellation, earlier than June, but keep your June appt.

For me I'm going to keep on my BC until the prescription runs out in Aug. After that I'm coming off it since DH and I want to start TTC in Dec. or Jan.

thank you, i'm going to show this to dh, cuz sometimes i think he feels that i use bc as an excuse for gaining weight. I'm the same way, 5 pounds is a lot for my body and its really noticeable.

ETS: i think dh thinks that i blame bc for my weight gain, not that i use bc so that i can eat what i want and just blame it on that

Re: Feeling a little down today, blah!

aw, this post made me feel sad. No girl should ever feel so stressed about her body and losing weight because of what her man is saying to her. That kinda suckss. I'm sure he loves you no matter what, but those kind of comments can hurt a lot. If I felt pressured by my dh to get in shape, I'd probably become bulimic. Seriously. I also put on some weight after the wedding and am now working on getting it off, but that's really only because I'M uncomfortable with it. DH always says 'We're married now, lets get fat.' But that's not ideal for me.

I had also thought it was maybe my BC that caused the weight gain. I went off of it for a little while and did begin to lose weight a little bit easier. But I'm not okay with staying off of it for too much longer. We don't like using condoms either and we are just so far from wanting kids, so it's kind of a dangerous game that we're playing. I'm just working on getting my medical records sent here so that I can make an appointment to see the GYN and get back on. You probably don't want the stress either (pregnancy scares and all that), so I'd say to stay on the BC. But I totally understand the weight gain delema. It really suckss. If i were you, I'd probably try to find another doctor that takes your insurance in the mean time.

For you. I know the feeling of wanting to lose some weight especially for summer and all that. But if you exercise and eat healthy you are doing all you can do. Not everyone is meant to be super skinny, you are beautiful don't forget that

Thank you
I know dh loves me, but he's one of those people who can eat soooooo much and not gain an ounce. He doesn't get how hard it is to just stop eating before you're full. He also never works out, but his job is very physical. Sometimes he makes comments about women who gain weight after marriage and how thats bs. He didn't marry an overweight person, so that person should shouldn't gain any weight!
I think i might go back to planned parenthood and have them switch me on to something else. I can usually get an appointment there very quickly.

What's bothering me about your post is not that you feel your BC is causing your weight gain, but the comments that your husband is making.
Is he so shallow in real life as he is coming off in your post ?
I don't mean to make you feel bad in any way, I am by no means a skinny minny and far from it, but those comments he makes are so hurtful and are making you doubt yourself. He has been blessed with a great metabolism that any of us would envy, but instead of encouraging you with your exercise regime, he's sabotaging you with those jibes.
Have you considered that your exercise routine may be building up too much muscle in your legs which will make them appear heavier ?
I have been 'blessed' with heavy legs, even in my leaner days. Got them from my father's side of the family.

I know that he sounds like a jerk, and sometimes he is! He does tell me that i'm beautiful all the time and that he thinks i'm really sexy. I just don't know what he's thinking when he makes those comments to me. Its like he thinks that thats going to make me want to work out, when in fact it does the opposite. Sometimes he's really supportive, and other times I think he makes those comments cuz he's in a bad mood. Which is no excuse, so i'll call him out on that and then come vent on here!
And yes, i defnitely think that i have some muscle mass under the fat, so i'm trying to do more cardio and less squats and lunges.
Thanks for your honesty. Its definitely something that I need to talk to him about more. Sometimes i don't think he even realizes how hurtful he's being. Like I'm just one of his guy friends who won't get offended.

Please do let him know that his comments are detrimental to you. Being in a bad mood should not be an excuse to say something so hurtful.

One day his metabolism is going to go kaput, and he can't use BC as an excuse
Seriously, you just need to find the right formula that will work for your body.
I'm tired of using BC and want to come off of it. I'm just afraid of the bad mood swings and irregular periods coming back, now that I'm getting closer to peri-menopause (I'm 42).

I agree with most of the women on here. It sounds cruel the way DH ridicules your body. Men sometimes don't understand how their words sound. They also don't understand how their words can hurt. You have to feel good about yourself. Whether that involved going to the gym and working out, or losing weight is all up to you. You have to be happy with where you are in your life, not where anyone, even you DH wants you to be. Hopefully you can talk to him and try to get him to encourage you instead of bring you down (which doesn't help you at all).

AS far the BC. I went on the low dose bc it didn't work for me. I had break through bleeding for over 4 months and had to go off it. If you aren't planning on having a family right away there are things you can try. I have a friend who is on Depo-Provera because she smokes too much and can't go on bc. She likes it. Its a shot that last for a couple of months (I think). They also have that new thing that they always run commercials for. I think its called Nuva ring. I am sure you obgyn can recommend something to you.

Re: Feeling a little down today, blah!

wow.. I AM IN THE SAME EXACT SITUATION YOR IN.... a little background info on my situation (hopefully rhis aides in your decision)... I was never on birth control until I got married.. so I have been on it for 8 months. At the 4 month mark I gained 6 pounds...I was always at a STEADY wieght, and then booooom all of a sudden im gaining wieght, my clothes were ALL tight, I felt gross, etc. Meanwhile keep in mind I was not eating any more than usual, I was still active, etc. I was so confused and upset as to why I was gaining the wieght. I kept telling my husband that I was sure its from the birth control and he was always a skeptic, he thought I was making excuses too. So I decided to go see my GYN. She said, 'hmmm 6 pounds in 4 months, well your a newlywed it just might be from good cooking or something else, I cant really say for sure that its the birth control, sorry'. Needless to say my husband was happy that I was going to stay on the birth control and we wouldnt have to use condoms.

So I stayed on the birth control and then I gained more wieght, to the point where my husband brought it up.... he was like 'wow, you are gaining wieght' or ' those pants got really tight on you'... ((Thankfully im not too senstitive about my wieght))) LOL.... I wieghed myself at my mothers house and BAM, now I gained a total of 15 pounds in 8 months.... THIS WAS GETTING OUT OF CONTROL, lol. ONLY THEN, did my husband say, 'no, no, it must be the birth control', becasue he saw that I wasnt overeating, etc. I called my doctor and told her that I was up 15 pounds, she even agreed that it was the BC and that month was the last month I was on BC.

This is my first week without birth control....I cant wait to see what happens, hopefully I can easily loose the wieght Ive already put on.

I hope this long response makes you feel a little reassured that IT CAN BE THE BIRTH CONTROL thats making you gain weight. TELL THIS TO YOUR HUSBAND. I am trying to investigate other options right now, (the nuvaring, etc.) but even though we have to use condoms for now and my husband is definately not happy about that he accepts it becasue he doesnt want me to gain anymore weight.
