Fight over money

Fight over money

DH makes 3x my salary and as of Friday I will be unemployed (I’m going to start going to school full time). This was a decision we both made although DH pushed this issue. I wasn’t quite ready to give up my income. We did the math and figured out we could get by with only his salary so I gave notice at my job.

So, this past week DH asked were I wanted to go on vacation this year. We have two of our good friends getting married in July which means bachelor and bachelorette trips and with me not going to be working I told him that we should forget about taking a trip this year. Anyway, my mom called a little while ago and said she wanted to plan a family cruise in April, it would be $479 a person and there would be no airfare. I called DH to find out if he wanted to go and all hell broke loose. He started yelling at me about how I’m taking him for granted, etc. I told him that the only reason I asked him about it was because the cost was so low. He pointed out spending money, etc that we would need. A simple, I don’t think it’s a good idea, would have been fine. But that’s not what happened. When I pointed out that he had previously offered to pay to take the groom and bestman (also a good friend of ours) to Amsterdam for the bachelor party, he said “I can make those decisions” I asked him why and he told me “You know why, do you really want me to say it”. I felt so helpless, I’ve always been financially independent and here he was throwing the fact that I’m not going to be working in my face and I haven’t even officially left my job yet. The conversation ended with me hanging up. He called me back and we “made up”. But his words are still echoing in my head. We are supposed to be partners, I don’t want to fight over money, it’s so ridiculous. What do I do? Let him have his power trip, it’s so demeaning. Is this why couples end up resenting each other, the almighty dollar...

I am so sorry-no advice, just

I would be really upset and frustrated. Money is definately a big issue for ALL couples.

Sorry this happened. $$ is a tricky subject and perhaps having a calm discussion over the weekend might help.
Perhaps a part time job (with few hours) would help you both transition into the school routine?
Remind him you both need to learn and practice 'fair' fighting.
good wishes

wow thats terrible -

yes couples fight about money all the time - but I think you have a different kind of situation here. I would say you should get something part time - and go to school. That way he won't say stuff like that.

I'm sorry you had a fight. His comment isn't fair and you are going to school to help make a better life for BOTH of you in the long run.

What happens when you have kids and possibly stop working (if you plan to)?

You should not be made to feel as though you are not contributing or that you can't make decisions. Your marriage is a partnership and all matters should be treated that way.

This is so wrong. These issues needed to be discussed in the beginning. You can offer him two options: 1-You go back to work and do school part-time or 2-You go back to school and work part-time. Put it back in his court. He has to live with the decicion and realize that it's not his money it's both your money. It wouldn't be that way if he were the one quitting his job and you were supporting both.

You will both have to make sacrifices, but that's the decision you made. You have financial committments that you have to honor and that means compromising.

Re: Fight over money

Hi Ladies,

Thanks for all your advice. DH and I had a heart to heart last night. I told him how hurtful what he said was and he apologized. He said that he doesn't think it's his money, that he'd give me the world if he could and he didn't know why he said that. He told me he felt terrible about it and asked me to forgive him.

He wants me to make sure that school is my first priority and if I feel I can handle it I can get a part time job. I'm a little nervous about this semester (I'm taking 16 credits), but once I get the hang of it I'm sure I'll be able to work part time. I've been going to school part time the last 3 years (I only have 32 credits thus far) but I am an honors student and we both want to make sure I maintain my grades for scholarship reasons.

Anyway, thank you all for the love ,
Kelly

I work full time and go to school full time (15 credits a semester in a doctoral program). It can definitely be done (balancing both), though I do give up time with DH since most nights I do homework and weekends are spent in class. My grades have not suffered at all; I have over a 4.0, and I think having to schedule my time so much actually causes me to be more productive. As an undergrad just doing 15 credits and working part time I had tons of spare time...Now, every minute is scheduled, and I have no down or wasted time. I won't lie, I can't wait to be done, but I love, love having the money I make while working full time. I really like having my own money. One day DH might be the only breadwinner, but for now I don't want anyone being able to tell me what I spend my money on. I would work at least part time as soon as you can just so he won't be tempted to ever hold that over you. Even if he doesn't mention it again, he thought about it or wouldn't have said it. There must be a part of him that either resents it or feels pressure by being the only income.

it's really hard, we are somewhat in the same situation. DH makes 3x as much as me and l love waht i do. He told me to go back to school, but to go back part time was so point less it ends up costing more in the end. So then he told me to stop working and go full time. I chose not to only because i am not motivated enough to go and dont want to take a chance like that. But everytime i buy something or ask if i can he makes comments about how little i make and how hes frustrated working two jobs to make up for the little amount that i make, but yet he wont let me get a second job. I think all these fights come with the territory and you need to find a way to compromise.. He probaly got upset because when he suggested it you said you couldnt afford it but then when your mom called it was ok for you to suggest it. Best of luck with everything
