Filing joint or separately

Can anyone explain the difference between filing jointly or separate but married.

Thanks.

Re: Filing joint or separately

Is there a reason you would want to file 'married filing separate'. You can get less money back if you do that.

Re: Filing joint or separately

I was just wondering exactly what it meant, i.e. why is there even that option.

We'll file whichever way gets more money.

Re: Filing joint or separately

All I know is that it's more beneficial to file jointly. There are only rare cases where separate filing is better.

Re: Filing joint or separately

Some people probably don't want to file married joint because they don't want to be responsible for what the other person is putting on their tax return maybe.

Re: Filing joint or separately

We are filing separately. But then again we have a kid so its beneficial for the one making the least to claim her.

I dont know why but some people getback less when filing jointly. Some it doesnt matter. DOnt know what formula there is to it
