We were woken up at 4:55 AM this morning by frantic ringing on our doorbell. It was the cops...the house next door was completely engulfed in flames They told us we had to leave immediately. We just threw jackets on, shoes, grabbed our wedding rings and ering (though DH took the wrong ring of his ), and ran out the door.
I've never seen a fire like that in real life...only the movies and TV. It was terrifying. Luckily no one was hurt, but it was really scary. The only thing that saved us was that it wasn't windy last night. Otherwise, the fire would have traveled to us. The neighbor's house is very close to our apartment, and the only thing separating them are a row of hemlocks, which are now burned as well. The backyard and back bushes are burned and there's ash all over, but other than that we were unscathed.
It's just so scary...we were fighting last night because he didnt want to get car/renters insurance yet because he didn't 'research' it enough, even though I need to get this done by end of month, so I was pissed at him, and we weren't nice to each other when we went to bed...and not only did all of our meager, uninsured belongings almost go up in smoke, we did too, because the cops kept insisting that 'no one lives there', referring to our place, and didn't want to come ring our doorbell, until the home owners of the burning house convinced them to do so!!!!
I swear if it wasn't for the sublimely ridiculous things that happen to me, nothing would happen at all.

Re: Fire!!!!
OHH no!!! i know how you feel tho! i was in collage, and our apt was on fire! our apt was the last to know about it, i woke up to my phone riniging and the person on the phone screaming you need to get out! i walked out of my bed room to wake up my roomates and saw our entire apt in smoke!!!! we had to climb down the fire escape!! scariest moment of my entire life!! our apt was fine tho, it was the apt on the floor below us, so our apt just had some smoke damage.
Im glad nothing happened to your apt!! was your neigbors home?? did everyone get out safe?? did they say how it started?? sooo scary!! glad you guys are safe!

Dix Hills family escapes predawn house fire Originally published: April 15, 2010 12:25 PM Updated: April 15, 2010 12:56 PM By GARY DYMSKI [email protected]
Photo credit: Mike Descalso | A Dix Hills family escaped unharmed early Thursday as a pre-dawn fire at the house on Illinois Street damaged the rear deck and the back of the house. (April 15, 2010)
A family member noticed the fire about 4:50 a.m. on the backyard deck of the house on Illinois Street, said Dix Hills Fire Chief Robert Adcock, and the mother, two sons and a nephew were able to escape the house unharmed.
'One of the homeowners apparently tried to extinguish the fire, but it spread from the deck up the rear of the house into the second floor and attic,' Adcock said.

In addition to Dix Hills, other departments responding included Greenlawn, Deer Park and Wyandanch. A total of 60 firefighters on seven trucks extinguished the fire in about an hour, Adcock said.

Get the renters insurance, ya never know! Most car policies offer a discount if you have a homeowners or renters policy added (my brother works for Allstate and he made us do it)
but seriously, thank god you are both ok
