For crying out loud! (Very long but somewhat amusing rant. Feel free to throw in your own stories)

I work very hard at looking like the typical unapproachable 'Im in a hurry and you're in my way so MOVE' New Yorker. But apparently I havent put in enough hours because people are forever stopping me in my tracks for help.

I take the bus from NJ to the Port Authority every morning and anyone who has ever had the misfortune to be in that area knows the level of depravity that you waddle through just to get to the bright lights and congestion of the tourist traps on 42 and Times Square.

So with this said, when people come up to you at random, your Ninja instincts kick in and you're liek 'you talkin' to me? Huh? You talkin' to me punk?' But people are ALWAYS talking to me! I have je ne se quois that seems to attract the infirmed, the old and the downright cuckoo and ALWAYS when I am on my way somewhere.

You say, so? Just walk away. And I should. That would be the wisest thing to do. Unfortunately I am not only blessed with a 'come harrass me' face, but also with a 'shiii*t , fawk, if I don't help them they might be the next rocket scientist with a cure for the next plague to try and wipe out mankind and I will be the reason the cure is never made and we all become dust bunnies,' heart.

Today it was one of the old that found me as I tried to hustle through the usual homeless asking for the same hard-earned pennies I gave them just yesterday, and the Salvation Amry guy who wants those same pennies I just gave to the homeless guy so he can buy him a steak instead of a beer. I dodge past the Metro news guy trying to whack me with a free paper and duck into Duane Reade into a moment of blessed peace in the aisle to decide what contact rewetting solution to buy so that I will be partially blind in only one eye rather than both until I can get to work and take them out.

As I go to pay, a hispanic woman with too much makeup and not enough words in her English dictionary starts asking the security guard, the cashiers, and random people for help in locating something. I try to make myself reaaaaly small so that no one sees me. Of course being that I am 5'6 and wearing 3 1/2 inch heels, I am Gulliver among the day laboring Mexican Lilliputians standing around me buying their breakfast and MONSTER energy drinks.

I try not to make eye contact but of course my concience twists my sensitive spots hard and I glance over. She sees me and I see the relief in her eyes for finding a kindred, stupid soul. There is also relief in the eyes of the security guard who can go back to practicing for the part of Scrooge in next year's Christmas Spectacular at Radio City.

She begins to tell me in rapid fire spanish, that her son is sick. Her grown @ss son who is the only one in her entire family of 8 visiting from Venezuela, who speaks any word of English and who is currently trying to connect with God on the porcelain phone to ask him when exactly he is going to die from the alien that is inside him eating his insides and forcing him to a fate of projectile pea green soup like our little friend in the Exorcist.

My new friend was sent from the Milford Plaza hotel in a cab to the Duane Reade 4 blocks away to become the Venezuelan Clara Barton who would save her son from the demonic stomach virus and thus manage to get her whole family into cabs and back to the airport for their Miami flight in exactly three hours. Of course, no one thought of how she would fidn the medicine she needed since she neither speaks, reads, or understands any English. And even if she managed to find some good (stupid) soul to stop their daily life and help her, how would she flag down the cab again in an area where they cannot STOP for more than 5 seconds to toss you onto the curb with your luggage before the donut muncher on the corner gives them a ticket?

I'll tell you how....

So after ten minutes of my broken spanish and her complete lack of English, we figure out she needs immodium and a nausea inhibiter. I find them both for her, as well as gingerale (she actually knew the word soda) and water. we rush back to the line to pay, only to find that it has multiplied much like the parsites currently squatting in her son.

After another ten minutes of being on line, she once again latches onto me and aks me to stay with her while she goes outside. Now my Ninja instincts are on full speed ahead again ebcause I am waiitng for someone to try and steal my purse or carve me like scrimshaw any moment now from a dark corner of uninterested people.

Holding ym hand she half drags me, huffing and puffing with her to the Milford Hotel, trying to keep her 30 extra pounds from falling off into the street while I try to keep my eyes open and my free hand ready to do some battle. Fortunately my 20 pound purse should be registered as a deadly weapon so I am well armed and ready to get down with my bad self.

We arrive at the crowded hotel on 45th and she clasps my hand and thanks me so profusely I feel a wee bit bad I am still looking over my my shoulder (and hers) for the would-be murderer. she tells me her name is Angelo and blesses me many times over and I skedaddle, still in one piece though I am now huffing it to get to work on time.

Hopefully Angela's son is as triumphant as Sigourney Weaver in defeating the aliens that lay within and they all get to the airport on time to harrass anopther unsuspecting (cue stupid) good soul into helping them find their Miami gate and thus missing their own plane to Timbuktu.

Merry Frickin Christmas.

You are BLESSED with a beautiful face and the compassionate personality to go with it!!!!! You did a REALLY nice thing Jenn and you know that woman and her whole family APPRECIATE it!!! I am also a wackadoodle magnet (usually just people who wanna 'talk' on my commute to or from work)! Frequently I indulge 'em but somedays... I confess, my IPOD has been my best friend. I have even put the earphones in but left it off, and completely ignored a few of the regulars trying to get my attention. I am SO bad...

-chuckles- thanks guys.... I write better than I tell stories lol. My voice is too monotone but I enjoy writing...

Collette, I wish I had my IPOD but thats ANOTHER FRICKIN STORY! Yesterday when I was walking and trying to get down the escalator, some @sshat two people behind me started shoving and trying to rush us and I got knocked forward. It was save my neck or save my MP3 player. I'd have been less pissed now had I saved the player. At least I could have listened to it from the hospital bed while in traction.

But NO. I save my own hide instead. The player gets disconnected from the earbuds as it falls from my flailing hand and lands on the the top of the escalator steps. I yell for someone to watch it because I'm coming right back up. I ZOOM down and up like Wonderwoman in less than 2 minutes and what do I find? You guessed it-NOTHING!

Someone STOLE MY MP3 player!!!!!! MERRY FAWKIN CHRISTMAS you bunch of Port Authority Ho Ho ho's!!!!

I am sooo upset. Sucker was 2 months old. HOW am I supposed to run now lmao. See thats what is even worse. Not only is that thief making me more susceptible to crazy people, but they are making me fatter as well! Unhealthy all around.... God love Nu Yawkers.

First of all, that was bookworthy...second, you were waaay too nice...I guess I was always in a crappy mood when I worked in NYC (probably because my boss was a d!ck) and i would have grabbed what she needed out of frustration and thrown it at an unsuspecting cashier, then pulling in a traffic officer and telling him to help the weirdo, as I don't have the time. The habit stuck...

People are always frantic this time of year in court and all want to approach me when I am literally carrying 5 pounds of files back to my office. They are all panicking. After the first time they don't get easy directions, I tell them 'I don't work here, ask that guy'-pointing to the last attorney who annoyed me that day!

Remember, being inconsiderate and mean can be FUUUNNN!!! Damn it, those consciences!!!

BTW...if you really want to be unapprochable in NYC (I had to do this, because we billed in increments of like 10 minutes-meanie attorney)...either you will get harrassed because for some reason, everyone thinks young women will take it, or.....talk to yourself at a level where many people can hear about random crap. Or pretend to be on your phone. I actually enjoyed the talking to myself while appearing flustered. When I did that, people seemed to avoid me like the plague )

And I promise, the cell phone works wonders...even if you are not on it, you can sound like you are in the middle of a nasty argument...and then watch people's reactions...it is too funny

Yea I feel good when I'm not cussing because I am not late but I always think crap...what if it were me in another country where i didnt speak the language and no one spoke English.... i would be shiiiit out of luck. Thats why I try to be a good person, but its suuuuch a shady neighborhood that you get paranoid.

Just 2 weeks ago I saw this tall young asian girl trying to ask another girl about our age for directions or something and my dumbass had to intervene because they seemed to be getting nowhere. She had a paper with the name of a hotel in the area and phone numbers of people. She was trying to call her friend to pick ehr up but the Port Authority is HUGE and they couldn;t find one another and she didnt have a cell phone. She was from I fprget where..Korea?

Anyway the pay phones were all packed because they ahve removed all but 2 since 911. So I made the call for her and the whole time I am thinking..crap crap they have my number now..can they get my address? Will the Korean mafia be waiting for me when I get home lmao. But my stupid helpful self did it because I have been in situations a few times where I had no cash and no phone and I had to rely on the kindness of strangers to make a call for me or give me a few bucks to get home. So I try and pay it forward-bribe my way into heaven

So I have the guy on the phone trying to find where he is. The chick who was originally helping the girl suggests we go stand outside so he can find us. Yea RIGHT thanks for nothing lady! YOU didn't wnat to help her so you send me and her outside so that i can become the next dissapeared American hijacked to some foreign land.

So we start walking to the exit in front and I'm makign eye contact witha bored looking cop like yes look at me, walking to the door. Keep your eye on me lmao. I was surrounded by people and a few cops which is the ONLY reason I went to the front.

Turns out the guy (his name was (Joel) was right outside but they kept missing one another cause they said to meet at Duane Reade but there are two; one on each side of the block. She was waiting with me at one. He was at the other.

They hugged and kissed, all pleased with finding one another and having no idea I almost swallowed my tongue in my anxiety lmao.

I am actually hoping to write a book one day about the stupid things I hear people say in court. Wanna help me? I can tell you what happened and you can use your artistic touch and make it sound waaay better!

But, you need to learn the art of talking to yourself in NYC...people will think you are nuts and will actually try to get you out of places quicker.

Absolutely. I told DH that I lived there for about 4 years prior to meeting him and he was amazed that I went to TImes Square on a very infreuquent basis (until they decided to hold my Bar Review Course on W43 and Broadway ) He tells me I become the moodiest b!tch when there! I usually avoid Times Sq. like the plague! I really want to slap those people...trust me, there is nothing there that is that wonderful.
