What were the major deciding factors in the location of your home/search?
If you moved or plan move to a new area did you research it and if so how?
We are having a really hard time narrowing down the list from 'West of 106/107'. Any suggestions?

Major Factors
For us it was commute time/train schedules to the city, school district, property lot size and also relatively close to family. Taxes also played a little bit of a role. They do vary from town to town. Since my husband grew up on the Island, he was also pretty predisposed to certain towns vs. others just based on a personal preference!
For more info (basic stuff) on neighborhoods in Nassau you should check Homeadvisor.com -- they give you detail on every zip code. Good Luck narrowning down your search!

? For those house hunting and recent homeowners
For us, the major deciding factors were:
Decent location - short commute to work and near a nice town center (Sayville) Also near family and the beach.
Good school district and desireable location for resale value.
Specific house issues - large lot, lots of big rooms, affordable and the work it needs is just cosmetic interior and yardwork - we can increase the value greatly with our own work, not having to hire contractors or invest in major purchases.
We looked in a lot of areas within a half hour drive of my job with the primary consideration being that it was affordable, good schools, we liked the feel of the area, it was not on a decline or looking shabby. We spent several weekends looking at houses and open houses and just driving around our targeted circle. While we continued to consider most of the areas we had first picked within our area, we definately had preferences as time went on.
Get out and see some of the areas, and when you find something you like check out the shopping areas, town centers, etc. Go to the local library and see what's going on in the town - there should be a posting board or flyers. Check out restaurants in the area if you like to eat out. Try to get a feel for what it would be like to live there - is everything convenient, do you feel 'at home' in the surroundings etc.
Good luck!

...that Lee and Karen H said. The only other criteria we had was that we live on the North Shore.

Ditto to everything...Funny story
I agree with every thing that was said-- def the part about going to stores, restaurants fast food places-- one of the reasons we chose our town (def NOT one of the major ones)was when we were searching out neighborhoods I went into the local eckerd to buy a map and the people were really friendly--i know sounds really stupid but i wanted a town where you felt comfortable and people liked other people--
ok i will stop babbling now--
Oh yeah and one big thing Make sure there are no bears in your neighborhood
we knew we lived in a bear area and our garbage was attacked for the second time this week--sounds crazy I know-- that's what i get for moving to NJ
