Re: for those of you who sent your marriage cert to SS
Honestly, I didn't feel comfortable sending it either so I went to SS in person in Mineola last Tuesday. First I went on-line and had SS mailed me the ppwk then filled it out & brought it with my license & original marriage certificate. (you can get the ppwk there-but bring a pen and fill it out while you wait on line)
I waited on the miserable line for 2hours exactly. I put quarters in the meter thinking it couldn't be longer than that and when I arrived at my car, the meter had 0 minutes left. I know they want to see the original seal on your marriage cert. and your license so theres no way out of that. They also told me I should receive my new SScard within a week. So far today is exactly one week-still no card. If you got the time-go and get it overwith, but don't anticipate a quick in and out trip. Prepare for the worst or just send it in the mail.

Re: for those of you who sent your marriage cert to SS
i have such a hard time getting out of work to go which is why i think i am going to send it. i just am confused about why the guy told me to send myt license. i dont want to be without it! and when i said that to him , he said that is why you should go to SS!!! but i also spoke to someone in MD who maybe doenst understand that they put the new name on the cert.
maybe i should just use my moms address and send it to a local NY office...

I used to work for the Social Security Administration and I still deal with them on a daily basis in my current work. You really should do this in person.

I went in person and filled out the form there, the whole process took about 15 minutes

I agree with going there in person. I went to the Patchogue office and it took me approx. 15-20 minutes total.

I printed out the forms from the website (or someone else did) & I had everthing filledout & had DH bring it to SS on his way home from work one morning. He was there 1st thing. Took maybe 15-20 min. & got me a receipt & brought home all my originals. I would NEVER mail ANYTHING to SS unless CERTIFIED, RETURN RECEIPT. They have Lost things tooooooo many time in the past on me!

Yes! He had everything required. I gave him my birth certificate, my DMV ID, my SS Card, marriage certificate and all the forms filled out & signed. Basically all he was doing was submitting the paperwork for me.

Re: for those of you who sent your marriage cert to SS
It was really easy by mail. I downloaded the form and sent the original marriage certificate (no driver's license). In about 2 weeks I got the license back and a week from that I git my new card (they come in 2 separate mailings).

I mailed mine. I called before to make sure I didn't need any other documents. I just sent the application and my origianl marriage certificate. I couldn't be bothered by going there personally. Their hours are 9-4, M-F. I don't think they care that most people have jobs.

argh... in Brooklyn its VERY strict. yu cant send it in and you cant go to the normal office. theres a certain office to go to. its totally out of the way and in a bad part of town! but today i got sent a letter from a company that will take care of it for me for $25. i'll just wait to go.
