For those that live with/lived with parents/IL's

How long did you live there for?

did you have an apartment? Or did you have an area of the house where you would have a shared kitchen?

Re: For those that live with/lived with parents/IL's

My parents own a 2 family home and we have the upstairs apartment. We lived there together since the wedding. I lived up there for about a year before the wedding. It works out quite well actually. I think DH was a bit unsure about it at 1st. I think he thought they would be too medlesome. But the rent is FABULOUS, we borrow food from each other when needed and other than that we don't see much of each other. I try to live as if we lived somewhere else. I think we've eaten dinner at my parents a total of 5 times since September and we had them over for dinner twice (once for my mom's b-day and once for Easter). Not sure how long we will be there but I think it will be for at least 5 years. Wish we could buy our own house but right now it's not possible. I don't regret it at all and I don't think DH does either! I am so glad that we had this option and I feel very fortunate!!!

ETA - We also share the cable service and we only pay for the HBO since my parents never had it and DH insisted upon it.

We live with my parents. We moved in last September when our rent was jacked up on our crappy apt. So my parents offered us to stay with them and save for a house. We are now house hunting so its been almost 8 months. We only have a room not a separate area but its fine. We don't pay rent but we pay for all the food and I cook all the meals for everyone. Plus my parents love having ds live with them. But I admit I am ready to move out and be our own little family.

DH and I moved in with his parents-we lived there for about a year...we shared the house with them and basically we had our own bedroom and that was it.

It wasnt too bad-but we both sat with them and drew a line in the sand and told them what they could get involved in and what was not ok

We live with my parents. We have our own apartment but share the entrance. We were nervous at first but once we go upstairs its like having our own place. We dont pay rent but I try to help out with different things like the cable bill.

It is great because my mom and I borrow food and supplies from each other. We eat downstairs every Thursday because my brother and sister also eat over.

My mother has not even been upstairs since we moved in and my father came up once to fix my sink. They just knock on the door and scream if they need us for something ( we share a phone line so sometimes to tell us we have a call )

We love it, really no down side so far.

eta: our original plan was to stay one year to save up for a down payment BUT we decided to stay for two. My parents SWEAR after two years that we will have to pay rent, but I highly doubt it.

We've been living with my parents since the end of February and we will be here till we move to NC this summer! Its actually not that bad......dinner is cooked for us everynight, lunches are made compliments of mom and dad, and I have nothing to really clean except our room and our bathroom. The only thing that really ***** is I sleep in my twin bed and Brian is on a mattress on the floor. BUT soon we'll be in NC- so it's all good Oh and the BEST part- its RENT FREE

Same here but it was more like 3 1/2 years but only on weekends if that makes sense. DH works over the road so he was only home on weekends. i stayed over on the weekends because I don't have my lisence (NYC girl till I married him) and it was too much hassle for him to come all the way over the GW to get me in the bronx, take me out then bring me back for two days.

It was really bad though because he was trying to work off debt which is why he went back home but in order to have oprivacy we would go out to eat (to diners) or just leave for a day and his mom would ***** that we were throwing away money. but the alternative was to stay holed up ina room all day and isten to her be passive agressive about how no one hlped her (and yet if we did she didnt want it).

It was awful. I would not do it again. It almost ended our relationship several times.

Ironically she wants to geta 2 family house with us and I said NOPE.

Ugh..I hate even thinking about it but...

When DH and I got married we lived with his parents, in a room...(DH and I never lived together before marriage) so we shared a one floor small house with his parents, his sis and her daugheter and husband (they moved in after us) and the grandmother...if you want to know what hell is like it go live with them lol. We stayed for 5mths until we can save up money to move out. We moved out Jan 1st and have been SUPER happy since

DH and I lived with his parents for about 3 - 4 months after the wedding. We had the upstairs of their house to ourselves (which was a bedroom and a bathroom). I hated it. Not enough privacy AT ALL. They would open our mail, come upstairs for no reason, come upstairs to wake us up in the mornings , interupt our conversations, mettle in our business.....the list goes on and on.

Before moving in with them, we had a great relationship. After the first month of living there, i HATED them and wanted to get out. Now that we've moved out, things are better, but our relationship will never be 100% the same again.

when DH and I were dating i 'accidentally' moved in with him and his mom. i lived there for over a year.
DH and I lived upstairs, where there was a full bathroom and our room, we 'shared' everything else.

Yes, we did!!! We just moved into a two bedroom apartment April 1, 2008. We basically were living in my bedroom and had to share the kitchen. We spent alot of time in the bedroom. Now we hang out everywhere.

Re: For those that live with/lived with parents/IL's

sorry to crash but omg i have to say that this thread has made me feel soooo much better about living in my parents basement apartment for a year or two. its small (tiny kitchen, tiny bathroom, mixed livingroom and bedroom) but we have our own entrance.

theres been family members talking alot of smack (no surprise there) about us living here but if we want to save $$ and stay in NY this is what we have to do. plus my grandparents and aunt and uncle lived here before us so its nothing new!

anyway thanks for making me not feel like the only one!
