?? For those that registered for China...

If not everything in the set was purchased off the registry - what are you doing now? Are you taking the $$ you got to buy the rest?

My mother somehow convinced me to register for formal china, because 'someday I'll need it'. Meaning, it'll sit somewhere for 10 years, but I found some very nice China and registered anyways. Because yes, SOMEDAY, I would really like to use it.

Here's where the question comes in: I registered for 12 settings. This is what I got
Flatware - 12 sets (complete)
5 pc Place Setting - 4
Wine Glasses - 6

Obviously, most people did not go the china route with gifts. Dont blame them - it's quite pricey!

So.....thoughts? I can't afford to buy 8 (or even 4) more place settings, so do I just wait? What if it gets discontinued?

Hhmm..... I'm sure some other newlyweds must be in the same boat.

dh made me register for it also, because his family is very old fashioned italian and thinks you need it also for special occasions. but, its sitting in my closet still; granted we have only been married for 2 months but it will sit there for a long time anyway. but anyways, yes, we used gift cards and stuff from what we returned and what we got from shower to purhcase what was remaining. because it was a lot of money..

Maybe each holiday or special occasion ask for a piece that you need to complete your set.

I registered for China and we were lucky enough that we got everything, but when my brother and his wife got married they didn't get everything from their China. What they ended up doing was buying a few pieces they could afford and then told both families and friends that for their birthdays and holidays that they wanted their China completed. I am pretty sure they have everything now and a lot of friends and family helped them get everything over the holidays when there was some crazy sales.

I also did not get many place settings. Altogether I have 5. I plan on purchasing a couple more w/my completion discount. But I know that my china pattern has been around for quite some time so I am not worried about it being discontinued... maybe you can find out from the maker or the store where you registered for it.

We're just leaving it for now and we'll buy what's missing down the road. We still have people who haven't given us a gift so they might buy some and we won't need it for a long time.

we got 6 place settings of our fine china ... right now, we don't feel like we need more than that (we're living in CA now, and coming home for christmas -- and prob just spending thanksgiving with us two) -- so we're going to hold off on buying the rest until we feel like we'll use it!

if we hear that it's being discotinued, maybe we'll buy the rest... but otherwise, we're waiting

We got 9 place settings and after our wedding our settings were on sale for $85 plus an additional 15% off, so we bought the three remaining set. On top of this I returned a waterford butter dish , which we had no need for and this more or less covered it, so we really didn't pay anything for them.
