recently there was a thread on here about changing yr name on yr passport and i got all scared because the poster said u had to send your original marriage license and i only mailed a photocopy. well it must have been a damn good photocopy because i just got my new one in the mail today with my new name no problem. and i got it in like, 10 days. maybe less....no expedited service charge or anything. annnnnd it got renewed for another ten years (some people said that it is only good til the date yr old one was good for and then youd have to renew it all over again).
just thought some of you would want to know.

Re: fun with passports
thanks for reminding me! I'm working on changing my name online right now!
I was wondering about that photocopy business- how the hell can they expect us to give up an original of our marriage certificate? That is nuts!

Re: fun with passports
I sent out my original. The woman in the post office said that I had to do that, although the form said I didn't. But I got it back the day after I got my new passport. But I really didn't want to send it.
ETA: I was told that if they rejected the photocopy, I would lose the fee i paid and I would have to pay a new one when reapplying.

Re: fun with passports
After doing a search, I've decided not to change my name on my passport. Supposedly if you put the airline tickets in your maiden name, you're good to go. Not worth paying that $75 and then having to renew it again years later.

Re: fun with passports
my new one doesnt expire til 2018 (which looks so odd and seems like forever from now) so u would get a good 10 years out of it. i wanted to change it bc i am kind of anal about stuff and want my name change to be across the board ya know???

Re: fun with passports
Yea, I got mine back in about a week. I guess it only took so little time since it was only a name change, and they do give you a new experation date. I sent my original and got it back, not ruined or anything.

Re: fun with passports
you have to give your original certificate, but they mail it back to you like a day or two after your new passport gets mailed. (it would make sense for them to INCLUDE it with the newly issued passport, but oh well!)
i got mine super fast too! i wish all passport transactions were this speedy!

Re: fun with passports
this thread totally just reminded me I have to set mine in to get my name changed or else I'm screwed for Europe.
So should I send in my real certificate or not?

Good question b/c it says you have to but that's just annoying especially that I had just gotten mine taken before our honeymoon.

I am keeping mine, but i have airline tickets in my maiden name. I don't know if you need to keep it, but I would anyway b/c you never know.

Re: fun with passports
I'm confused...here are the instructions on the form:
3. Evidence to suport a name change or OTHER CHANGE in descriptive data. • If your name has changed, the name change document you must submit may be a certified copy or a complete and unaltered photocopy of your marriage certificate or court order showing a seal and officiate/judge signature. If you are unable to document your name change in this manner, you must apply on the DS-11 Application form by making a personal appearance at (1) a passport agency; (2) any Federal, State, or county court of record or any probate court accepting passport applications; or (3) a Post Office which has been selected to accept passport applications. • If there is a change or an error in the descriptive data in your recently issued passport you must submit the appropriate evidence showing the correct information (e.g. certfied birth certificate or marriage certificate as described above). • All documents will be returned to you with your passport.
It says a copy is acceptable.......I'm mailing mine tomorrow and was plannig to mail a copy.....
