getting an antique dress cleaned?

my goddaughter/neice is being christened in a month or so and i have my moms christening gown that she and i both wore when we got christened. unfortunately i was a puke-y baby and left it with these horrible stains. my mom never got the gown cleaned after i wore it. I would LOVE for my neice to wear it but i dont just trust any cleaners to try and clean it. Its over 55 years old and its very sentimental...any suggestions on where to take it or what to do to get the stains out???

Thanks so much

Lady Ruth, the woman who introduced DH to me, works with fabric all the time. Her wedding dress which is BEAUTIFUL btw had sadly gotten a stain on it. Being that the fabric was very fragile she washed it in her bath tub by hand with woollite. She just used a little and it cleaned her dress right up and she let it line dry. Now I don't know how dirty her dress was or how old the stain, but she swears its the best way to clean fragile old clothing. I hope this helps. Oh and she used either cold or lightly warm water. I don't remember.

The worst thing that can happen is that the gown is ruined.
I have the christening gown that my mom, aunts, uncles, half the town that my mom grew up in, my sister, me, and finally my niece wore.
The gown is 80 years old and was made by hand out of very fine cotton lawn material.

Take ember lynn's advice and wash it by hand in the tub or a deep sink, using cold water and Woolite or Dreft, which is a baby detergent good at getting out milk and formula. Don't use to much soap, and just swish the dress around. Don't rub it or wring the water out of it.
Dry it flat on a towel, block the dress to keep it in shape.

Good luck and post pics of your goddaughter wearing it !

That sounds more like what Lady Ruth told me. So I would go with her suggestions.
