Girls who are buying/bought houses

Original post by Toucan311

The house that you're buying or bought now... is this the house you plan to stay in 'forever' or is it a stepping stone stort of house? DH just wants A house right now, and then wants to, like, trade up later. I'd rather wait and save, and buy the house that we want to stay in, raise a family in, etc...

Re: Girls who are buying/bought houses

we would have liked to have bought a forever house- but that wasnt an option this time around- so we bought a starter home- well a coop actually in queens.

we have hopes of staying about 3-5 years and making a big enough profit to get into a forever house- but we will see.

there are a lot of unknowns.

We are definitely buying a forever house. Think of it this way. If you buy a forever house and have to move -then fine, you have an even nicer house to sell. But if you buy a starter home and you CANT buy something else, you are stuck.

I just know too many people STUCK in their first homes or condos or coops or whatever. For different reasons - unexpected pregnancies or sickness or losing a job.

My sister was stuck in a ONE BEDROOM apartment with two babies and her husband bc she couldnt go back to work since my nephew needed full time care. . .there is no way to plan for things like that.

Plus, I am just that type of person. . . I dont like change and I like being comfortable in my surroundings.

My parents always thought their first house was going to be their starter house, and that they would eventually move...30 years later, they are still there...

Our house is pretty much our forever house...unless we win lotto or something, we're staying...we love it, and it's big enough for a family...we're looking to put a pool, deck, etc in soon, and once that happens, it's really forever

With the market the way it is, we went and bought our 'forever' house....well, like Tina said unless our neighborhood becomes a crack den. With me living here it just might..............

Re: Girls who are buying/bought houses

I think we will be seriously looking to buy starting in the summer. We have gone back and forth about this because I work in the city and DH works in Commack. Our families are in Patchogue and the house prices are really good here. We thought about a condo/coop further west but it would be really nice to have our own house. So we've pretty much decided that we want to look in Patchogue and maybe further west on the south shore-still Suffolk to find a starter home. Then when our kids are older and we can afford something west of here we will look for a bigger house. Originally our plan had been to find THE house now and be done but there are different priorities now.

ETA: We are going to look at homes that have potential to add on, have basements, etc. so we will be ok if we decide to stay.

Well we did a coop....we did so bc #1 houses in my neighborhood are too expensive for us right now and #2 figured it'd be easy living for a few years....we got a 2bdroom so we dont have to run out when we have a baby.

I think that buying a starter is good in that it builds equity and you own as opposed to rent. If you have a downpayment, why not buy something to start in? JMO

Re: Girls who are buying/bought houses

Dh bought the house we are living in now about 9 years ago, before we met. I really like it and believe it is a forever type of house (it's roomy and in a good area) but he bought it as a handyman special and it still needs some updating....we are finishing the kitchen now and plan to gut a bathroom in the spring, then we need a deck and a patio, then the siding has to be done....ugh. Sometimes I think it would be easier to sell and try to find a house that has more of what we want already in it, even if that house was a little smaller. So I guess what I;m saying is it also depends on the amount of work that needs to be done to the house when you buy it and whether you can tolerate having the work done...if this makes any sense. For us having the kitchen worked on was very hard, everything in disarray

Re: Girls who are buying/bought houses

We bought our house on eastern long island 2 1/2 years ago. It was a new construction on a huge piece of property. It is 4 bedrooms and is big enough to raise a family in but with that being said it is also very far from our families. I am not stuck on it being our forever house and neither is DH so we will probably not make it our forever home. When the market goes back up I am sure we will start weighing our options.

Re: Girls who are buying/bought houses

We wanted a forever house when we were looking. I took in to consideration the school district so when we have kids we are in a good district. I also took into consideration how close we were to our families. I wanted a good school and for my family to be close, while being really close to my job. I want to be able to get up and leave for my kids in the case of an emergency and not have to worry about commuting to get them.

Honestly, I know a lot of people who are stuck in their first homes, which they bought with the intention on moving one day....you don't want that to happen to you, you know?

We bought a forever home. We didn't want to be forced to move. It's a big colonial with a lot of property, but it also needs a lot of cosmetic updating, fortunatly nothing major. We plan to fix it up in the next few years before starting a family.
We could have a bought a perfect condition starter home, but we wanted a larger space in a really nice town and we found a desperate seller in a house that was not set up to show.

We are definitely in a 'starter home.' Our house is no bigger than a large apartment--but the positives are that we have our own yard, basement, garage, etc. But we're actually looking to get into a bigger house at some point this year. No matter what though, we'll be moving out of state in the not so far away future, so I've never looked at it as buying my 'forever' house.

We're trying to buy a forever house

We just put an offer on a house (trying to agree on a price ). . .its pretty big now, but it has enough property that we could expand if we wanted to. (and we probably would want to)

Re: Girls who are buying/bought houses

We are lucky to have a new home that doesnt need work and we do have room for a family but we dont want to raise kids so close to the city and would rather be in suburbia. So no...this is not a forever home!

We planning on buying a 'starter home' first. Something we can def. fit children in but not something we plan on being in forever. After a few years we plan to get something bigger

That's what we bought. We couldn't afford to buy a 'forever' house, but the house we did buy is a good place to start. We can stay here for the next ten years and still be comfortable.

Re: Girls who are buying/bought houses

on long island, to buy your 'forever' or dream house that you will be spending the bulk of time in when you are first married is - well, it's a tall order. i think it is a little unrealistic in today's market -- maybe out of state but on long island, it is so difficult to not have a starter house. then again, years ago when things were much cheaper my parents started out in a little condo and worked their way up to a cape and then their 'dream' house where they raised their kids and will be until they downsize (most people move when they retire)... for us, we are looking at condos and small fixer-upper houses first and then we will stay there for about 8-10 years, maybe have one child, then move up to a nicer, larger house where we can stay until they are raised. especially with the market the way it is now, it is a great opportunity to get a nice house that just needs a little TLC - fix it up and then make a profit on it in 10 years when the market turns around again -- because the market is like a cycle -- then, you take all the equity from that sale and buy a really nice house! that is what we are planning on doing. the key to this is buying in the same school district you want your kids to eventually go to -- that way, we buy a shiitbox (lol) in smithtown, fix it up, sell it in 10 years and move to a nice house in smithtown -- that way, whatever kids we have at the time don't have to switch schools.

that's the plan for us - but you have to do what makes you happy.

Re: Girls who are buying/bought houses

Ideally we are looking for something to be in forever. The first house we put a bid on that is now falling through wouldn't have been good forever, so I think it's for the best.
