Did you have to have pre-TTC labwork done? I go to my doctor today, and she told me I have to have all of this crazy BW done. She says sometimes childhood vaccinations don't 'take' and that I might need to have vaccinations over??! And she is screening me for things like cystic fibrosis? Is this necessary? We have no family history.
The best part is we are not even TTC, she said that we should do this anyway just in case.
I work for doctors and think I can spot when an office is just trying to add extra tests to make some $$$.

i didn't have to do this. i could understand if you had some pre-existing condition, but if you're healthy, and not complaining of anything, i don't see why extra tests need to be done.
i had my annual while we were TTC and i asked my dr if i needed any extra tests, and he said no. i just had my regular annual exam.

Thats what I figured, especially b/c I specificially said we were trying to NOT conceive.
She also said that I shoudl hvae a routine pelvic sonogram just for a baseline? Why? I have NO history or family history of cysts, no pain, no problems. Why should I make my insurance company pay for a pelvic sonogram??

When I went for my yearly appt in dec, I talked to my OB and told her we would be ttc in the next month or so, and at that point she decided to do some blood work to make sure everything was in check to where ti should be. She also checked for some of those childhood vaccinations.

seems excessive considering you are NOT trying to conceive- I spoke to my doctor about it and she mentioned doing blood work before we started trying but since our plan isnt for anytime soon, she suggested waiting until we were seriously ready.

If you aren't TTC, to me it doesn't make sense yet.
Once u r TTC, it's not always a bad idea just to get the blood work done. We are and I've been through all of the blood work. My family has no history of cystic fibrosis (ever) yet, through the bloodwork, I found out that i am a carrier for it. DH had to get tested and thank god he was negative, otherwise 2 carriers could possibly give the disease to their children.

it sounds like a bunch of crap to me if you are not ready to start a family.....
she prob wants to get all she can from your insurance company cuz the fee reimbursement on regular visits keeps going down, i know that doesnt make it right but that maybe whats going on
regular check ups with basic blood work is always a good idea to help you stay healthy

during my last routine exam...mine mentioned blood work as well. and she said they do extra tests if you are prone to certain diseases based on your ethnicity/background etc.
we arent officially ttc but i had the blood work done anyway since i was there already and stopped taking bc pills.
i read online about getting vacinated for stuff before trying, dental work, being healthy, getting a physical blah blah blah

I didn't have to do this either, after we found out we were pregnant that is a different story but before nope no bloodwork was done!

I just had a gyno appt and told him we'd be trying in a couple of months - is there anything I need to do, and he said no. Just gave me pre-natal vitamins. No bloodwork, nothing. I think he did do an internal sonogram- he put this wand thing inside and I saw everything on the screen (sorry if that was tmi). I was actually surprised that was it.

Yea there are def drs that order more tests etc just to up the insurance payouts...very sad but true. There are even drs that get kickbacks from certain medical facilities for ordering certain tests..I saw your post about a new GYN and I would do the exact same thing!!!!
On a similar note, my SIL has a cyst that her gyn wants to remove- most cysts do not need to be removed....the dr waved the 'C' word in fornt of her and she automatically booked the surgery w/o getting a second opinion I was so mad at her for not double-checking!!!

seems excessive. I know if you have Jewish blood and ttc, there is a gene for a disease you should make sure you are not carrying-TaySachs (sp?). If you and DH carry the gene, your child would most likely end up with it and they don't live past 5 yrs old. It is a horrible neurological, slowly delibating(sp?) disease that leads only to death. When TTC, there are childhood vaccines that may need to be updated b4 like MMR. We have to be tested at work also. Otherwise, I know that I had to have some testings during but not excessive. I have never had a 'baseline sono' and I have had 2 kids and nearing 40 and the same gyn for 20 yrs. It sounds like they are fishing for extra money from your ins co.
