I've been attempting to switch to organic food because I'm getting kind of afraid of what's in the food we eat. For those of you who eat organically, where do you buy your food? I know Trader Joe's has a lot of organic stuff but they're not so close by me. I've been wanting to switch to more organic produce and meat/poultry but I feel like everything is super expensive! How much do you typically pay for organic food vs. regular food. I always buy my chicken on sale so anything over $3 a pound makes me I know it will be more than that if I go organic but I'm just wondering what a 'good' price is and where you do most of your shopping. The Waldbaums in my area is very limited!

(I can really only eat organic because of my stomach issues, so here goes...)
Chicken: Costco*You can buy the chicken breasts and slice them up, then wrap them for single serve* makes life easy :)
We are not red meat eaters though, whenever vin wants a steak he gets it at his moms lol
Fruits and veggies- local farmersmarket by me
I make my own granola bars with honey, dried fruits etc...
Pastas- Stop and SHop Cereal- Stop and Shop (Puffins is awesome) Cookies: Stop and shop(huge variety of newmans own!)
For chips- costco - vege crisps
dip: homemade tatziki sauce (and for salads) They also sell a good one in costco

Re: Girls who eat organic food
We try to buy the majority of our fruit/veggies from the local farmers market also. It is defin worth checking out what is in your area. Sometimes buying local fresh produce is more beneficial than buying imported organic. After a bit you will figure out where you can get the best prices on different items. I live in VA so two of the places I shop they don't have in NY. However Stop & Shop has a pretty good selection of organic/natural products. They even carry their own brand. Also Target carries some organic items cheaper such as the Newman's brand.

Re: Girls who eat organic food
I buy some organic things from Waldbaum's, they have the Green Way brand. I think A&P and Pathmark carry it too...whichever the stores are that are all owned by the same parent company. DH is super fussy, so I have to buy some of this...but I actually really like the Green Way stuff too because they have some pretty cool things, like Italian Sodas and Snickerdoodle Oatmeal, and fancy frozen pizzas...'snob appeal' organic, and I'm a total food snot. Trader Joe's I'll use for some things, but usually the natural no preservative stuff, not necessarily organic.

Re: Girls who eat organic food
I eat organic as much as I can. The best stuff to get organic is the fresh fruit and vegetables. Especially tomatoes (I read that somewhere).
You can find organic food almost anywhere these days. Whole Foods has lots... but it's also quite pricey.
I go to stop and shop and they have a whole organic line of food. It's called... ahhh... why can't i think of it right now... but it's good. I want to say it's like 360 degress something naturals is the name?? I'll come back for it.
It's best to start slowly... because it is expensive... so buy a little at a time. Stop and shop even has organic milk and chicken cutlet breasts.
Good job on switching over. there's a whole lot less crap in organic foods. Just be careful... because food only has to be a certain percentage of organic content to be considered organic. so read the labels.

Re: Girls who eat organic food
I eat (mainly) organic food. The most important produce items to ALWAYS buy organic are potatoes. Because pesticides seep into the soil (where potatoes grow) and stay there, organic is always the way to go. Other things like bananas and cucumbers aren't QUITE as important because of their skin, just be sure to wash them first even with the peel on, touching the peel and touching the food will transfer whatever is on the outside.
I go out of my way to Whole Foods in Jericho (swoon!) but Stop and Shop does have a decent selection. I am not a fan of Wild By Nature (Huntington/E. Setauket), I think their quality has gone down in recent years and their prices are freaking expensive.
Oh, and I always buy organic milk.
Great tip to tell if it's really organic or not: the stickers on the produce!
Want to know how your supermarket produce was grown? Then check its price look-up code (PLU). Those little stickers affixed to your pears and potatoes reveal a lot more than how much you'll pay. If the number is:
5 digits, starting with 8: The produce was genetically modified.
* 5 digits, starting with 9 The produce was grown organically.
* 4 digits The produce was grown conventionally (neither organic nor genetically modified).

Re: Girls who eat organic food
I agree on buying anything with thin skin organic like potatoes, berries, apples etc.. Bananas I don't bother b/c the skin is so thick. Tomatoes be careful with I always buy organic b/c most of the others are GMO, they actually contain a fish gene in order to keep them from bruising during transport. This is super important if your vegan. Also GMO's freak me out almost as much as artificial sweetener. You will get the hang of it. Oh, and all dairy products defin organic.
