I just got called to serve on Grand Jury Duty. Does anyone know what this is going to entail?

Grand Jury Duty

I was called once so I can tell you about my brief experience. They told us about the case and the length of time they expected the trial to take. In this case it was a murder/drug/gang charge and they expected the trial to last a few months.

They interviewed each prospective jurer and asked us to write an essay about how we felt about drugs and our society. I thought that was strange but later found out it was probably a death penalty case and they wanted to get to your feelings about that but couldnt come right out and ask.

Anyway I didnt end up on the jury becaue during a break I walked outside to get some fresh air. A court officer came out to call us in. As I was walking back in 4 scary looking guys approached me and started asking what I was doing etc. A court officer saw that I was obviously distressed and came over and disbanded the group and brought me inside. I then saw him talking to the ADA. I was dismissed in the next round of selection and escorted to my car by a court officer. I guess they thought the 4 scary looking guys said something to me or just scared me enought that my conclusion on the case would be swayed.

Grand Jury Duty

I think Grand Jury duty is different from regular jury duty. When I lived in the city, and got called, it was for 1 full month - mornings only. What a NIGHTMARE! Basically the Grand Jury decides whether cases go to trial so you don't hear just one case you hear many....your notice should tell you something. The Grand Jury decides whether or not to indict someone, not whether they are guilty or not.

Lee is right

Grand Jury duty is longer, you hear cases presented by the DA and decide whether there is enough to go to trial.
Once you serve, you are exempt for 8 years.

But if you served in Nassau or on any jury in the last 6 years all you have to do is produce proff that you served.

Thanks for clarifying things for me ladies. My principal is going to write a note asking that I be allowed to postpone since I'll be missing my last month of school, which includes testing, placement issues, and report cards. Do you think it'll help?

With regular jury duty they are willing to give postponements for reasonable excuses like the final month of school, especially if you give them an alternate time you can be available - ie: June - August.
