Hardwood Flooring Question...

Hardwood Flooring Question...

Has anyone had, or know of anyone who has had, hardwood floors refinished?

Our goal was to have ours done soon, then have furniture delivered before Christmas. Guess we`re running out of time!!

I`ve seen ads for places that have dust free methods, and I wonder how 'dust free' they really are. My parents recently had their floors done, and they said there was dust everywhere, even though they hung tarps up all around the rooms that were done.

I`ve also heard conflicting opinions on what`s better .. oil-based or water-based methods.

Anyway, if anyone can give any opinions, advice, suggestions, etc., I`d really appreciate it.

A couple of companies we were thinking of calling are:

Callahan Brothers
Richard Baltar
Heritage

Hardwood Flooring Question...

Kel, we had our floors refinished last year before we moved in. There was definitely dust, but not quite the horror show I expected. I believe he used a water-based method, but I'm not 100% sure. I was more concerned about the finish - I wanted satin so it wasn't too shiny. They came out good, except, they didn't dry as quickly as we had hoped and in some areas the poly was not even so he did have to come back and do a touch up. In all, we were happy with him - we just had him back to do some work on our stairs since we changed the saddles. Its definitely going to be harder to do when you are living there with the smell and the fact that you can't walk on the floors while they are drying. If you want, I'll find out from the hubby who we used - I can't remember off the top of my head. He wasn't from a big company, though. Definitely cover everything you can as tight as you can and put tarps over any adjoining room doors (like for us our kitchn) that can't be closed. Let me know if you want me to find out the guys name.

Hardwood Flooring Question...

There will be dust - there is no such thing as dust free. Be careful about painting too. You should really paint AFTER the floors are done and all the dust has settled and been cleaned up. If you have already painted be prepared to redo the floor molding. In the end it is definately worth it. Redoing my floor made a world of difference in the overall look of my home.

Hardwood Flooring Question...

We had our floors done before we moved in(actually they were working on them as I was getting married). There is definitely dust and when they put the poly on it STINKS.
We used AAA Hardwood Flooring and they were great. They did work for my parents and a few other people on our recommendation.

Another Hardwood Flooring Question...

We have to do the same thing with our floors and we are in the process of getting estimates to have them done. I do have a question though about stain/bleaching. Can you bleach hardwood floors? My husband was watching HGTV (we're addicted) and they quickly mentioned a 'lightening' solution he thinks:)!!! Our floors are currently stained a medium brown (they're natural color maybe?) I believe and we love it, but Chip wants a more blond color in the bedroom... Is it possible to bleach them? Also, where is AAA Flooring located? Do you have a number?

Thanks!

I just dug out the floor paperwork.
The number for AAA Hardwood Flooring is (631)273-9273 and the guy's name is Carlos. The contract that I have here says that they do bleaching.
We had the floors refinished in the living room and hallway(including closets) and had a new floor laid in our dining room. All had 3 coats of poly applied. The cost was about $1600.
