Has anyone ever sent..

their original documents to a social security office for your name change? I am lazy and just want to mail them everything. Did you get all of your stuff back? How long did it take to get it all back?

I a nervous they are going to loose what I send them (passport/marriage license)..

Re: Has anyone ever sent..

Social Security is good for losing or never receiving things that are mailed so if you mail them I would at least mail them return receipt requested.

I had my DH take everything there when he was off & get a receipt & bring home all originals! I don't trust SS. They have never received to many things in the past from me.

Re: Has anyone ever sent..

I didn't feel comfortabl mailing thme. I went to the office in Melville and was seriously in and out withing maybe 10 mnutes. It was very simple. As for the DMV well that's whole other story...4 hours later!!!!! HA!!!

I had the exact same experience. They were very prompt returning my origianal docs and issuing me a new SS card in my married name. MUCH better than my experience with going to SS and waiting for an hour at lunchtime, having made no progress in line

Re: Has anyone ever sent..

Thanks Girls. I dared to send it all out on Monday and got it back on Thursday. I sweat a little bit thinking it would get lost or stolen, but it was definitely worth not having to go to the SS office.

Re: Has anyone ever sent..

I sent my marriage license and passport only. I didn't want to mail anything more important than that, if that makes sense...like a license, birth certificate, or social security card.

I didnt even know you could mail things to them. But I felt better doing it myself and getting it out of my mind in one day.

Re: Has anyone ever sent..

I'm debating on sending my original marriage certificate. I sent a copy and they sent it back stating they need the original. I'm waiting a while until I get my drivers license with my married name on it so I can send the temporary one.

Re: Has anyone ever sent..

I dunno - I would be VERY uncomfortable sending my identity thru the mail. 'Things' tend to happen. Bad things.

I just got back from the Melville office.

The feds have been advised of the change in status!! It took all of 10 minutes - as advertised previously.

LOL Belle!

I heard that if you send it through the mail you don't get your documents back? Is that true?
