having sister problems...

having sister problems...

This may be a long read. I just don't know how to handle this situation, and it's bothering me, b/c I can't shake the fact that I just don't care about my sister anymore.

We grew up pretty close, then in our early teens she started hanging with the 'wrong' people. It got really bad, she was doing cocaine and alot of other hard drugs. She was going out with random guys online , and going to hotel rooms to party. I have tried to be there to help her when she needed help. I tried to tell her that she needs to change her life around, but she wouldn't listen to anyone, so I just stayed quiet and let whatever happen happen. Just being there when she needed me was all I could do at the time. (If anyone has ever dealt with someone close to them who has had a drug problem, I am sure you can relate. It's not as easy as telling them 'hey don't do that'.) She would tell me about the house parties she would go to where she would wake up in bathtubs or random places and have bruises on her from falling and she wouldn't remember any of it.

A few years ago, she cleaned up her act, realized that she was doing the wrong things in life. She has since been drug free and sober for a few years now. The only thing she still does is smoke weed. I have tried over and over again to mend our relationship. when she was doing drugs she would lie to me and my mother all the time. It was so hard to take anything she said seriously, b/c we figured she was just lying again. Supposedly she has told us that she isn't doing that anymore. I want to have a great relationship with my little sister, but I don't know how b/c I just don't trust her anymore.

I believe she is still drug free, but the weed is what makes her a different person. Some people can smoke weed and have normal lives, my sister cannot. My sister just has an addictive personality. She cannot just walk away from something. I think that the weed just changes her. She is snippy, and so irritable all the time. I try to tell her that I can't even talk to her like a sister b/c she gets mad if you say something that she doesn't agree with and goes off on me about how bad of a person I am.

The other day she told me she wanted to come by and see our new apartment and the new puppy. I told her that was fine (I livei n queens, she is in North Babylon), She asked me if I could come pick her up, I told her that I would just have to check my money situation and I would let her know. I did not say no. She text'd me back saying how much of a B!tch I was and how much she hates me and hopes that me and DH get a divorce and how I am so mean b/c I wont come and just pick her up. I tried to explain to her about low funds and how I would have to drive from queens to LI to queens and back to LI and then back to queens again. She hadn’t talked to me for weeks, and then sent me an apology through myspace. I told her that I was tired of going back and forth like this all of the time. I am tired of not being able to say how I feel to her b/c she gets so angry with me and wont listen to my side of the story. She blew up yet again, telling me that I was a horrible person for saying those things to her and that she hopes she never sees me again, blah blah blah. I just told her I didn’t have time for her drama anymore. I know it was harsh, but she just doesn’t get it. She thinks she can treat me and my mother the way she does without any repercussions.

She called me Saturday night in tears, crying b/c she felt bad and she said she was not right lately b/c a woman she works with just passed away suddenly and she was good friends with her. She said she didn’t want to be mad at me and vice versa. I told her that I loved her and that I was sorry that we had that big fight. My problem is, I still don’t feel any emotion towards her. I feel so numb and void of any feelings against her. I don’t know if I still love her. I don’t think I feel like we are sisters or we have any kind of relationship. Can anyone offer any advice or anything to try to help me from feeling this way towards her.

:-/ Sorry it’s so long, I just don’t know who to talk to about this, and maybe someone on here has dealt with a family member or close friend with the same issues.

Re: having sister problems...

my best friends sister has had a destructive personality and lifestyle since high school (over 10 years ago). It's very frustrating, especially when you feel like you've gotten through to them, and then a week later there back to the same crap.
Since she's been sober, what is her life like. Does she work full time? Who does she hang out with? Does she have a SO? Usually weed doesn't make people irritable, so i don't think that that is what is making her act like that. I'm not condoning smoking weed, but if she used to do really hard stuff and is just smoking now, I wouldn't give her a hard time about that. Unless she's in debt for it or can't function at work because of it. Sorry, i don't really have great advice. But i think over time, there is a possibility for the two of you to have a great relationship again. People do change, she just has to WANT to.

Oh, Sara, I am so sorry to hear about this. What a terrible thing to be going thru. I do agree w/ the PP that weed doesnt generally make people irritable - its gotta be something else. Unless that is just who she's grown up to be. Do you know if she's nasty and acts this way towards others in her life, or just you? I also agree with the PP that in time, I feel you guys CAN get back to a good relationship, but its not going to be easy, and unless you BOTH want it, it probably won't happen. I know, I am not super helpful. I just wanted to offer you a few words of encouragement and some

Re: having sister problems...

I have gone through some tough things in life watching family and friends battle drug addiction. I have seen it all. Heroin addiction was the hardest to deal with. It is painful and hard to accept that I could not do anything to make them change. They had to want it. I pray for your sister and hope she is doing the right thing. Being that irritable makes me wonder though if weed is the only thing she is doing?? Also if she has these mood swings, can it be that she is Bi-polar. I have a cousin who is and she was like this also. Always nasty, then nice, then nasty.. SHe was put on meds and is doing so much better. I hope you both can patch things up. I know its hard i have been through it and understand it and your feelings. Just know its not your fault..

Sometimes its really difficult to forgive and move forward when so many things in the past still hurt. Sometimes time helps things these things, and sometimes it just takes a conscious effort on both peoples parts to try to keep the communication lines open. The best thing you can do is keeping talking, try to think about the good times, and try to make new memories.

I agree 100%, I am willing to figure out what needs to be done to change, but she wont. She thinks everyone else has the problem Thank you guys for all of your help though. I really appreciate it.

Thanks alot :) I really hope that she isn't doing any other drugs. She does act this way to everyone. Her POOR boyfriend is such a nice guy, and she treats him like crap. She broke up with him once b/c he didnt' tell her she was 'beautiful' enough. My mother and I just looked at her like 'seriously?'. :-/ It's heartbreaking that I can't even forgive my own sister and just put things in the past, b/c she keeps doing it over and over again.

I think you should sit down with your sister and tell her exactly how you feel. She probably will not be happy about it a first but it might help her later on.

It sounds like she may be depressed. Maybe that comes from smoking to much weed. The truth hurts but your in the relationship too.

She works full time, but wont do anything to better herself. She complains that she can't get a better job b/c she doesn't have a car, and then fights with my mother b/c my mother who works 2 jobs , cant afford to buy her a car. I don't care about smoking weed and have never given her a hard time about that. I just happen to think that if she is telling me the truth, and telling me that she isn't doing anything else, then the weed is what is making her like that.

She is in debt, and she just did a training thing for work where she got about $2,000. So I told her that she could pay off her credit card that she has outstanding and other bills. She yes'd me and my mother to death, and told us she did but I don't think she did b/c she still says how she has no money b/c she is in debt still.

It hurts b/c I really just don't have any love left in my heart for her.

Thank you all for your help though , i really appreciate it and I knew I could count on you guys :)

I tried that, many times, and all she can do is come back and tell me how much of a terrible sister I am to talk to her like that and how she hates me. :-/ It goes back and forth like this ALL the time. I think maybe she is bi-polar as someone suggested. It just doesn't make sense that she would flip the B1tch switch like that so often and not have any sort of psychological problem going on.

Re: having sister problems...

Would writing her a letter help maybe? Explaining how you used to be close and you want to be close again, but you can't even get close to that unless she is willing to understand where you are coming from, how you have been hurt by her actions and her mood swings towards you, by her addictions, etc - and that if she is unwilling to accept any responsibility for those things and unwilling to take some of your advice, that you can't move forward???

I would stress in the letter how you care about her and your relationship. Even if you don't right now -- I know you WANT to -- so stress it. She seems to be the kind of person who needs reinforcement a lot. She probably has a self esteem issue. If money were not such an issue, I would suggest counseling ... she needs it and i think the two of you would benefit from going together. but i know money's tight for everyone.. but a letter might be good because it will allow you to state your case without her blowing up. give her time to contact YOU after reading it, and I would even tell her the ball's in her court now.

not sure if you've already tried this ... but it might help. can't hurt right??? good luck hon a good relationship with a sister is worth fighting for!!!!

Re: having sister problems...

I have had similar issues with my father. He is still in my life and I find it extremely difficult to interact with him on a daily basis due to his history and our shared past. One thing I have learned is that you can't be responsible for others. I know how hard it is to feel numb to it all, because it is someone whom you should care immensely for. You have to stick up for yourself and not act as an enabler. You seem to be doing a good job of this.

Also, she needs to take responsibility for herself and get some psychological help. She sound as though she may be suffering from bipolar disorder ( I have worked in the psych field in the past as a therapist). This behavior is also representative of someone who is addicted and can't face or handle their own responsibility in the matter.

Be supportive if she's willing to seek out help but do not feel guilty for your feelings.

Good luck!
