Hawaii Honeymoon

Did anyone go to Hawaii and not really like it? DH and I just got back from our honeymoon in Hawaii and were really disappointed...are we the only ones who feel this way about it?

Re: Hawaii Honeymoon

sorry - it's mine and DH's favorite place. Our HM was the 3rd time we've each been there (2nd together) and even after our long 23 day HM, we were sad to leave.

What didn't you like?

DH & I lovved it.
DH tried to convince me to move there the whole time we were away. He's still trying - I hear it every time we get snow

If it werent a 13 hr plane ride...and i wasnt so close with my family - I'd say yes in a heart beat!

OMG - DH keeps saying we're retiring there. He says he's got it all planned out. It's adorable. We are already planning our return for 2011!

Dh wasn't so excited with the Big Island, but we loved Kauai. He also talked about living there.

And thats with us only seeing Oahu...i can only imagine how its gonna be if we ever make our way to the other islands!
We'll be saving for a house for the next 4-5 years & not having kids before then - so we've promised each other we will go back before all of that fun stuff starts.

Do you have a timeshare there since uve been there so many times?

Well what were your expectations? Where did you go? We went for our HM and loved it more than we expected to.

We went to all of the islands...we didnt like the big island at all...I thought Hilo was boring and Kona was nice...but not spectacular...Maui was nice...we went to Haleakaela (spelling??) and that was nice but I wasnt thrilled, we also we to Kauaii..we did like it there- actually that was the place we liked the most and we went to Honolulu...the beaches were not great in our opinion...the sand was rocky and it was windy...I dont know I thought for going so far away it would have been better....I guess its just us

I can actually use my Disney timeshare there because they're tied into RCI. We haven't done that yet although that's the plan for 2011. We use our AMEX card for EVERYTHING though so we get FF miles so that helps. DH is just an amazing saver while I'm an amazing spender!

I have been to Hawaii but not for our honeymoon....its nice but I didnt think it was this magical place how people describe it so I can see how you werent wowed by it.

We didnt pick it for our HM cause I had been there and DH doesnt care if he ever goes.....I felt like there are place that I would have rather seen then Hawaii so we picked a different place for our HM.

We absolutely loved Maui, imo that was by far the best b/c it had lots of activities and gorgeous scenery. However, I do agree that the Big Island wasn't that nice. It was kind of boring and I didn't think the scenery was very pretty. But it was the last leg of our trip so it was nice to relax, however there wasn't much to do.

eta: We stayed at the Fairmont and it was a beautiful hotel in Kona, not sure where you stayed.

Re: Hawaii Honeymoon

I have been to Hawaii 9 times in my life and went there for my honeymoon. It's my favorite place on earth.

The Big Island is my 2nd favorite island actually because it feels like most authentic Hawaii, what the Polynesians came to. It also has the least rain, on the Kona side. If you know where to go on the Big Island the scenery is gorgeous. Where did you stay? We stayed in Waikoloa and they have one of the prettiest beaches, its on all the postcards. I have also stayed in Kona Village which is so old world Hawaiian. The Big Island is also where they still buy in to the Hawaiian gods and you learn the myths of Madame Pele. Where you can see petroglyphs and Hawaiian graffiti and you can still find a lot of Hawaiian culture, plus Kona coffee. But I stay away from Hilo. Its rainy and right now covered in Vog.

Where did you go on Maui, please tell me you did more then Haleakala. I wouldn't even take DH there, not worth it. But the road to Hana is amazing and we loved Lahaina and Wailea.

As far as the beaches, they are volcanic islands. Kaui is the oldest so its going to have the most sandy beaches and vegetation, but it was still formed from Lava Rock. There are 5000 years between each of the islands and the Big Island is still volcanic so it has the least sandy beaches. But the volcano also bring along the coral reefs which is why they have such beautiful scuba diving and snorkeling. But Oahu has beautiful beaches. Did you drive up to the North Shore or just stay in Honolulu.

How long were you there for? Maybe you tried to do to much in the time you were there. I usually try to aim for two islands on a trip.
