HEATHER i have a grammar question!

dont laugh. i really dont know the answer to this....

i never know when to use 'affect' and 'effect'.... here is my example - im writting up my monthly treatment summaries for my clients and here is the sentence:

The social worker spend a lot of time with _____ discussing pros and cons regarding different decisions she could make and how they would effect the situation

is that the right word to use? or should i be using affect? WORD says to use affect but for some reason i feel like i should use effect

Something can affect ........ or
Something can have an effect on ............

ah ha! thanks for explaining that... i think at one point, i knew that - but totally forgot it

affect would be like an influence of some sort and effect would be considered as the result of something..

like affected area = the area that is the under the influence of ___

the effect of the merger = as a result of the two partners joining..

something along those lines..
