I am sorry to post this question but i really need some advice.... i know times are tough all around but.... I have to fire my receptionist tonight..... so i really need:
any tips or some nicely worded phrases or ways to give positive criticism
so she doesnt lose it with me or break down on me
please dont hate me for this she really does deserve to go, she cant handle the smallest tasks and she has been with us for almost 4 months now and still doesnt get it

Re: help.......
Ive done this before. I would just to tell her plain and simple that you are very sorry but you do not feel that it is working out and it is in the best interest for everyone to let her go.
She may be argumentative or even cry just prepare yourself and try to think business.

thats what i am afraid of.....
i really feel bad for her on one hand.... but on the other hand, she makes more work for all of us the way she messes up and i am sick of checking all her work

Ohh, was this the girl you vented about recently? Do you think maybe she's kind of expecting it? Maybe you can just explain that you're really sorry but you don't think this is the right place for her and she's really better off finding something that is better suited for her. Does she have any good qualities that you would be willing to give her a good reference? Good luck!

Thats exactly why you shouldnt be harsh but you shouldnt be all understanding and the shoulder for her to cry on. If she becomes argumentative have your reasons ready for your decision. If she starts to cry say we're sorry but we just dont feel like it was working out and wish her the best for her future. I always get stuck doing the dirty work in my office.

yes thats the girl..... my boss, the owner of all our offices calls me on her all the time and we decide enough is enough with her.
she is a nice girl, she just doesnt think or take any initiative and i have told her she needs to step up a little more and she doesnt listen, but she forgets all the regular job duties too.
i honestly would have trouble giving her a letter of recommendation

her latest offense was leaving the office unlocked for the weekend..... thank goodness we have a wonderful cleaning man who called us on saturday and said he made sure it was locked when he left, but he just wanted us to know

OMG, that's not good! Is she young? Sounds like an airhead. I was going to say, does she have any potential at all that you could sit her down and talk to her but it sounds like you did. She may be half expecting it, especially after leaving the office unlocked.

she is young, i think 25 or so.... i wish she was expecting it but one client even asked her about the new girl (we already started training her replacement ) and i over heard her tell him there is no new girl and she didnt ask me anything about it.... plus i barely got an apology for the unlocked door thing

She hasn't even realized you're training someone new already? Aw, she's really not the sharpest knife in the draw. I'm not sure if you said it already, are you in a doctor's office?

Yes, so then I would say leaving the office unlocked is pretty serious. She's lucky she wasn't fired on the spot.

Re: help.......
Oh gee..that is hard.
I would do this. Keep it simple. 'Unfortunately this was not easy for me but we have to let you go. I just dont feel you are grasping the job functions and most recently you put us in danger by leaving the office unlocked' Umm I dont know what else but keep it simple. If its too wordy she will ask alot of questions and it will leave it open for discussion. If she says can I have a second chance, you have to be firm and say no you have given her many chances.

Re: help.......
I would just say that you've had some concerns about her----which she knows about because you've talked with her about them----and that leaving the office unlocked really showed that this is not the job for her.
